Why do people on this board hate on Georgetown?

Anonymous
Because it sucks.

I don't think people on this board hate Georgetown any more than they hate every other school. Anytime anyone something positive about a school, a bunch of nitwits pop up to trash it. (i assume it's often either sour grapes or the desire to feel superior).

Georgetown is a great school. I do think a lot of area kids consider it too close, but at my DC's boarding school, with kids from all over, it is a pretty coveted place.

The one that really confuses me is the people who always compare Georgetown and Notre Dame for the express purpose of putting down Georgetown. I don't get why they can't both be worthwhile schools? It's not like there can only be one Jesuit school. I'm not Catholic but this one always confounds me.

It’s because there is one crazy ND mom who has to put down any school that her son turned down to go to ND. She has to continually tell herself he made the right decision. She’s the one spouting absurd endowment stats at every opportunity. She pops up in every Georgetown thread.

AU gets lots of appreciative posts.

??

GU -rats, mold, terrible facilities. GW-original leader in the market technique of raising prices to raise the “brand”. Incredibly mediocre students and faculty for the price.

There are things to dislike about every school. For Georgetown it’s:

Weak endowment
Georgetown area is a pain/no metro/no parking
Super expensive
Lots of rich international students
Preppy vibe
For DC locals it isn’t far enough away as I’d want for my kids to attend
Catholic/Jesuit might turn some off (not me)

For me, I feel like it doesn’t do a good job really encouraging school loyalty. I chose it for career opportunities, and SFS did that perfectly for me. But I don’t feel a ton of school spirit.

In contrast, DH went to Michigan and that place is like a religion. It’s crazy, but sometimes I wish Georgetown did a better job in the school spirit department.

Personally, I feel that's such a bonus! Why do you need loyalty? Why all this school spirit? It's not rational or an objective assessment of reality. I don't have any association with Georgetown or any other Jesuit institution, but I think the absence of school spirit lives up to the precepts of Jesuit teachings - first and foremost, reasoned discussion. These were created to be intellect-driven institutions. They do not demand loyalty. They want your brain, not your heart. And that's so much healthier.

In theory, of course. I do not have actual experience with this university. I'm just looking at it from the founding Jesuit angle.

Why? $$$$$$

They don’t get in. Seriously.

It’s very tough. In any given year, we barely have a single kid from our HS get accepted. Only 7k undergrad, test required, not on common app and they don’t superstore but want to see every test taken.

I disagree with the “mediocre education” pp’s. I didn’t attend Georgetown, but I have been very impressed with the grads that I’ve hired, much more consistently so than any Ivy (other than MIT).

That said, I do think Georgetown has slipped a bit in the general “prestige” department from say, 20-30 years ago. For reasons unknown to me, I think they have an problem creating the kind of school loyalty that results in the alumni support, monetary and otherwise, that you see at other private universities it’s size. It’s reflected in the campus, which is a mishmash and is looking pretty run down these days. I get the feeling the administration has been resting on their laurels for some time.

Georgetown's acceptance rate is 11%, OP.

I really don't think Georgetown cares what you think of them.

Except this has real impact on their endowment.

That's certainly true: people always vote with their heart, not their brain. Why does a smaller endowment bother you?

It has an impact on facilities, which in turn impacts aspects of undergrad experience.

1. ND is Holy Cross, not Jesuit

2. The reverse is also true -- GU boosters bashing ND, likely because ND always higher on the USNWR rankings.

ND is just obnoxious. They think they walk on water.

Newsflash: Most colleges have rats, especially if located in a city.

Most restaurants have rats, too - even the highest rated.

Since you sound so naive......
