Yes. It is bigger - as are most of the schools suggested. But it's a state school (most of the recommendations are for private schools) and probably more competitive than most people think. And it's a little less competitve, but not by much, especially if the student is applying as an oos to Clemson vs instate to W&M. Clemson SAT: V610-690, M: 640-750 W&M SAT: V: 660-740, M: 640-750 Clemson acceptance rate: 62% W&M acceptance rate: 42% |
This hits the nail on the head. The closest highly ranked public to W&M in size is probably Georgia Tech (16,000+) and it does have a big time sports culture. But it is 2.5 times the undergrad enrollment of W&M. The only other two publics with too 40 ranking and under 20,000 undergrads are UVA and UNC-CH. |
Davidson was the regular season champion of the Atlantic 10 and made the NCAA Tournament this year. They lost by 1 to Michigan State. Now their baseball team is on the cusp of being ranked nationally in Division 1. |
You are comparing full cost at W&M with tuition only at UVA and Michigan. UVA and Michigan have higher OOS tuition. |
Davidson football? |
Nobody has claimed davidson has a good football team. The OP is looking for more of a sports atmosphere than W&M in a similar school. Though smaller it could easily appeal to the same type of kid and does have at least one strong sport. |
| See, the thing is, the top students aren’t choosing schools for sports, so you’re gonna have to give a little in one direction or another. |
LOL, I just thought the same thing. Absolutely not. |
| Football is not an afterthought at W&M. But why not just go for the gold and apply to Alabama? |
NO, the all in for OOS at UVA is $53,667, still $10k less than W&M |

Oh trust me it is, they are terrible. |
But football is by far the biggest college sport in attendance. |
It’s a mix at Rice. Women’s volleyball and basketball often get quite a lot of fans as the teams are often very competitive. Same with men’s baseball. Men’s football is virtually always contending for last place in the league, but it’s still really exciting to go to games when they play Texas—same with mens basketball. It is pretty funny that a school with 6,000 undergrads has a football stadium that seats 60k plus. |
