In the Power 5, it would be schools like Wake, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Stanford, Duke, and Boston College, plus Notre Dame. Some of those are obviously exceptionally difficult admits. Outside of Power 5, perhaps Rice, Davidson (basketball only), Richmond, etc. Most big sports public schools tend to be significantly larger. A number that are similar sized (Tufts) aren't big sports schools.
Not a single public on your list.
When it comes to publics, W&M is singular: there is no other public of its size and quality.
This hits the nail on the head. The closest highly ranked public to W&M in size is probably Georgia Tech (16,000+) and it does have a big time sports culture. But it is 2.5 times the undergrad enrollment of W&M. The only other two publics with too 40 ranking and under 20,000 undergrads are UVA and UNC-CH.
