I don't know the full story of exactly what's going on in the book but it reminds me a LOT of Never Let Me Go (same author) which is a little disappointing, just in how similar it feels both in pacing, science fiction tilt, keeping a lot back/ shrouded from the reader in terms of what's really going on. It's almost like he had an idea for a novel, and couldn't decide which direction to take it, and then decided on Never Let Me Go, and now later he's decided to flesh out the novel in a different way with Klara and the Sun.

Like I said I'm only halfway through so someone else who has finished it might laugh at me and tell me I'm off base.

I loved Klara. It broke my heart. I haven't read Never Let Me Go so I can't compare them.

You should read it! It truly feels very VERY similar to Klara.

OP here, I looooove The Aeneid. Hope you are enjoying it as well!

PP. I'd read the Iliad and the Odyssey previously so I thought I'd complete the "epic poetry" trifecta.

NP. Good plan! This takes me back to when I took Latin and Ancient Greek in high school and my classics teacher told us that those epic poems are repetitive because people used to fall asleep during them and they needed to be reminded of what’s going on. He also talked to us about the similarities between epics and hip hop.

Dr. Pottle was an awesome teacher.

One more random thing: Dr. Pottle used to have us say with him, “A gerundive is an adjective, a gerund is a noun” over and over. To this day—17 years after I graduated high school—I still remember it!

Looking for something else.

I'm reading the first book of the "Kristin Lavransdatter" trilogy. My adult DS picked it up in a used book store, read it, and recommended it to me.

I posted earlier what I am reading but I think Station Eleven was my fave book of this year so far. I finished it last week.

The Unsinkable Gretta James - fun, light-but-not-empty read.

Based on the recs, I'm getting:
The Unsinkable Greta James
Olga Dies Dreaming

Just read Rebecca Serle's In Five Years and loved it.

Anonymous wrote:I just finished a random book I grabbed at the library - The Pessimists by Bethany Ball. I give it 3.5/5, it had some decent satire and some interesting characters so I found it to be an enjoyable read. There were a few flaws though, but overall I think I'd recommend it. Now I'm re-reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. I really like this book (I wanted to check out About a Boy but they didn't have it at the library).

What are you reading and would you recommend it? I kind of wish we had a monthly book club post here on DCUM, I always like seeing threads about books but they can be kind of sporadic.

Not reading it now but A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby was good.

House of Sky and Breathe

I like the characters but it is waaaaaay too long.

The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett. It’s very good though I am having trouble getting into it. I think it’s because it’s about sisters and I’m having issues with mine.

I just finished Perfect Tunes by Emily Gould and would recommend, especially if you have ever struggled with holding onto yourself and your pre-kid dreams as a mom.

Next up Hush Hush by Laura Lippmann because I need a good murder mystery. But I’m also very excited to read Circe by Madeline Miller as I’ve been in a Greek myths kick generally lately.
