My kid went to school without a mask and came home with a cold

They aren't masked at lunch and other times nor masked outside school so its not a surprise.

You don’t get exposed to a cold an immediately have symptoms. This whole thread is totally stupid.

Also my PK kid has had many colds (and what we think was RSV) over the course of the last two years despite being in a school with a 100% mandatory mask policy. It's not uncommon. If your child hasn't been sick at all, I question how much time they have actually spent in group learning environments because I don't know any that haven't had a single virus circulate.

Masking to prevent colds has always been a dubious proposition. Especially masking kids who take their masks off regularly to eat and nap. But anyway...

That’s not normal.

The incubation period for a child is three days. Your kid did not get a cold at school.

But but masks

It probably depends on the person. I catch them pretty quickly.

Incubation for a common cold can be as short as a day or two.

You pick up colds from touching surfaces and then your mouth/nose/eyes. Masks don't prevent that; hand washing does.

They why did I catch a cold.47 hours after some idiot sneezed on me in the grocery store line? I sanitize and wash my hand and don't touch my face ever (a result of parents who old school slapped my hands down as a child.)

Someone is not wearing a mask somewhere and just not telling you.

+1. Colds are annoying and I certainly haven’t missed the lack of illness over the past two years, but it isn’t healthy for your immune system to go thoroughly unchallenged, especially in younger children.

Kids do need to get normal little sicknesses again

My kids go to a school where masks are still required and just getting over colds (the toddler brought it home and passed it to the kindergartener, tests were negative). Strangely enough I spent considerable time unmasked around both of them while they were sick at home and I appear to be in the clear.

I think we will always mask on planes/public transportation and in the grocery store during the winter. Just to avoid severity of colds but I also do think little kids need to challenge their immune system but agree that I will miss those days when colds were rare.

Eh, our kids are masked and they still have gotten colds! masks aren't impervious. And colds are part of life - if you don't get some now you will simply be a much more sick older kid/adult.

Our childcare has had several colds that have gone through teachers and kids but not covid. I think colds are more contagious than covid in most cases.

My kindergartner has been wearing KF94s since August and has had a couple colds. They take their masks off for snacks, lunch, and recess, and most kids don't wear them very well anyway.
