Master 9th grade thread

Congrats to your daughter! It's a lucky thing to have choices.

Those girls' schools are so different! Our DD is in her first year at Madeira, couldn't be happier. She didn't consider Holton or Stone Ridge, but also has friends at Holton there for whom it's a great fit. (We just don't know anyone at stone Ridge. Not a dig on it by any means.)

Admitted student visits--if the school is having them--are an excellent way to get a feel for a school and were super helpful to our DD in deciding between Madeira and two other co-ed schools she was accepted at last year. She really liked the other two schools--even one that she was originally less enthusiastic about--but when she got to the school she ended up choosing, it just felt right. Such an intangible thing--the feel, the vibe, the fit. But she recognized it immediately as the best choice _for her_. For another kid, they could have had the same reaction at an entirely other school.

Sorry--I'm the PP here and realize I should have indicated that that was in response to the Holton/Stone Ridge/Madeira/two coed schools poster.
And I also realize it's insensitive to the person whose daughter didn't get into Madeira. Really, who knows how these decisions fall out in "typical" times, much less in pandemic pressure? FWIW, we have found the Admissions Staff to be decidedly kind and human, not just in initial/application interactions but since then as well. I can't imagine a gentle, exploratory call would be rebuffed, even if they have to deliver hard news.

congrats! which ones?

Holton, Madeira, Stone Ridge and two other co-ed schools.

Holton is the best offer of those. Congrat's to your DC

IDK PP, Stone Ridge is pretty great too and I’m not Catholic. I think you’ll hear many folks say Holton is the best of these 3 but not sure that is true. My DD decided on a top Co-Ed private. She was accepted at Holton but we didn’t even look at Stone Ridge and I regret it. I have been universally impressed in our interactions with SR over the years. Give it serious consideration.

Aside from being same sex, they are very different but all excellent schools. Hope your daughter finds the right one for her. Congrats.

Yes, and we have an acceptance for 9th (and will be attending).

Congrats! It’s a GREAT school. My two are there now, but older dc is applying out for 9th and hoping for Duke Ellington because of the art.

DS is in for Landon and WL for Potomac. Any chance your Potomac offer will go to my DS?

What is your rationale? I'm the previous poster who had the same choices. It came down to Gonzaga vs STA for us. They seem similar and yet in retrospect they're very different. My son ultimately chose STA because of the academics, the relationship with NCS and the distance from our house. He has very good friends who enrolled at Gonzaga and he definitely works a lot harder than they do (much more homework, stronger academics) which is both good and bad.

My son loved the vibe of Gonzaga from his first visit. He liked STA too, but not as much. Our older child is at a different big3 and we have seen how much work it is. The relatively lighter homework load at Gonzaga is a plus for our family, not a minus. Just happy he has choices!
