Swimsuits for my aging rear end

You should buy yourself a really flattering suit that's comfortable. I just bought these two and found them so high quality. Whatever, I'm 45 and I just want to feel as good as I can.

They cover my butt, do not require waxing, but are form fitting and don't look out of proportion with tops.

I have both swim skirts and the Athleta Surge boyshorts, and they are fine. The challenge with all of these is that when they get wet, they take a long time to dry and cling to your skin.

You wear these to pool/beach on vacation?

DP: I do. You can cinch the legs a bit if you like. In addition to coverage, I like that they work well for my regular mile swims—they are form fitting enough not to drag. I can’t wait to get to the outdoor lap pool!

I am long waisted and have never liked how I look in board shorts, even short ones -- from the front it really helps to have something cut higher on the leg.

What do people think about color or pattern? Would you go with a solid color or even a dark neutral color to avoid drawing attention to things, or would a fun print help distract from the stuff I'm less excited about? I'm considering these but wondering if they are too bold and I should look for something more subtle:

They are all nice. I like the third one the best.

If you are long waisted you may want to avoid high necks and even one shoulder as they elongate the torso.

Honestly it sounds like you have a nice figure and will look better than most women your age. Aging is natural. My mother is 68 and still wears regular tank bathing suits and swims regularly.

I'm pushing 50 and have more of a bum than most and this is my favorite swimsuit when I don't want to wear a swim skirt:

It's full coverage and the front is super flattering.

Swim skirt. Not all are equal. Get one that looks good on you. The one I have hides what needs to be hidden but looks good.

Can we start a trend where women can look fashionable at the beach but also have their upper thighs covered like men do?

+100 I hate that anything with more coverage than underwear is deemed frumpy or assumed that you're trying to hide something.

I'm this poster, and yes, I wear these everywhere. I always get in the water, and hate when skirts/shorts drip and cling to me afterwards. These dry quickly and I can still throw a sarong over them as needed.

Agreed. The idea that all women should have to wax/trim their bikini line in order to wear underwear on the beach or to the pool has always struck me as so deeply misogynist. But if you don't you are a hippie or a prude. I think it's better than it was 10 years ago (definitely more full coverage options now than there were in 2010) but it still feels like there's stigma. I really hate it.

My DH will sometimes propose impromptu beach and pool days in the summer and then get annoyed with me if I don't immediately jump at the chance. But the truth is that I'm not always "swimwear ready" and don't always feel like getting myself there on a dime. At those times I am so envious of the way men get to go through the world, with their bodies always acceptable for pretty much any setting. That sounds so liberating to me.

There are swimsuits like this and I'd really encourage everyone to try them out! Also you can wear board shorts to the beach without raising a single eyebrow. Or skirts! Really there are limitless options for us who haven't lasered everything off yet. I think it helps a lot to consider that at the end of the day, no one else really cares at all what you are wearing - at the beach or anywhere.

I was paddling the other day with a friend who wore swim tights - it wasn't out of body shame it's for sun protection. But that's an option too! Too hot for me most days but I've been trying out a bunch of different bike shorts style swim bottoms and have yet to find my holy grail pair but I know they're out there.

Another +1 for these. I love them.

You have options, you are choosing not to take them. There are LOADS of swim shorts, swim skirts out there that provide all the coverage you want. Also, if you have some stubble, it's ok for it to JUST SHOW. Honestly! The world will not end.

Look, I like to be groomed too, so I am not judging that impulse. But I have definitely had days where it's not done and that's ok. I may put on a coverup or pair of shorts once I get out of the water, but I still go and enjoy and swim. Find a way to make it work for you to be impulsive because you are right, it is DEEPLY misogynistic to expect otherwise from other women. So also maybe stop yourself before you critique another woman on the beach in the too small bikini also.
