1. How do you come to terms with your butt starting look legitimately middle aged? I've always been trim and still am and didn't put a ton of thought into my butt but in the last year or so it's started to look... old. I've found peace with other signs of aging but this one makes me feel bad. Or like covering up. Anyone have words of advice on getting okay with it?
2. Can you recommend bathing suits that look okay on women in their late 40s and 50s whose bodies look like they are in their late 40s or 50s? I want to wear something I can feel reasonably confident in because I don't want to convey to my DD that you can't walk around in a bathing suit after a certain age. But I'm struggling -- nothing looks right. Would love specific suit recs if you have them. |
| Sorry but can you be more specific ? Cellulite? Saddle bags? Just a flat butt? My solutions vary. |
| Good shape but mostly just cellulite and everything is a half inch lower than it was, like, yesterday. Not terrible, just obviously aged. |
| Why not wear a skirt suit? |
| Board shorts and just own it. Wear a bikini top if you want to show some skin / get some vitamin d. |
| Skirt and bikini top or tank top. I sympathize, OP. I am more self conscious about my butt than any other sign of aging (though I don’t live the forming jowls either). It really affects my self consciousness in bed. I’m thin and gaining five pounds helped a bit. -51 yo premenopausal woman |
| board shorts are 100 times better than the swim skirts in my opinion. |
| This is a problem that can only be solved in your brain. |
| I'm 49, 115 pounds with a sad butt. I found that boy shorts are the only style that's somewhat flattering on me. |
Well put. You're 50. No one expects you to have a perky rear end. |
| I wear a bikini with a skirted bottom. |
Disagree. Skirts are easier to move around in. The board shorts don't stay down and ride up in the water. Skirts just flap down easily. |
| Swim leggings. Bonus points for sun protection. |

I feel like the answer is a combo of: boy shorts (or some other sort of modest-coverage bottom), and just coming to terms with the body you're living in.
At least that's how it's going for me so far! I have a couple pairs of these in different colors: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=657741012&cid=1026482&pcid=1026482&vid=1&nav=expmore%3Aswim%3Acategories%3Aswim%20bottoms&cpos=2&cexp=1501&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D1026482&cvar=11273&ctype=Listing&cpid=res22022805612954841280800#pdp-page-content I wear them when I'm not wearing board shorts. I don't feel like I am fooling anyone in them but I also don't feel completely naked in public. I've been meaning to try these: https://itsnowcool.com/collections/bikini-bottoms/products/the-boy-short-rust Even when I was younger I didn't like wearing tiny bikinis - I relate strongly to Tobias Fünke's never nude tendencies - but, yeah, at 48 I feel like these sorts of bottoms are good, Also trying to learn to accept and even love your middle aged body! (I know; I know! But seriously.) |
| I love Boden suits - especially the Santorini and the swim short bottoms. They provide lots of coverage and support, and are cute. |
