You have 800+ graduating students in a large high school. Each school is only going to take in so many students. Lots of very smart students at the W schools, which is why some of us avoid them. Would you rather have a really smart student in the middle of the pack at a W school or a really smart student, at another school who is in the top 20%? If UMD takes 60 students per school and takes them from the top.... |
Edinburgh - Beng in CS Lse - Economic History Both finished 4 years ago. I have a nephew who did some engineering undergrad, I forgot which discipline, in The Netherlands. |
Not only will she be fine, she'll likely get significant merit aid from multiple schools. |
I come to DCUM for posts like this. A tiny glimmer of normalcy in the midst of hyper competitive histrionics. Thanks PP! |
My kid with lower stats then yours - 3.8W and much lower test scores - applied test optional and accepted to JMU, VCU, WVU, ECU, and Tennessee. Your kid will be fine. |
| Clemson is an option, as are schools in the T60-80 range. She’ll be fine. If she can up that SAT score by 100 points, she’ll have more options at better schools |
| The SAT is fine for most schools in this country. Definitely identify safeties and matches and apply as early as possible. Can she apply test optional to any since her GPA is pretty great? |
| A 1300 SAT is 87th percentile, or roughly a 27 or 28 ACT. We know someone (white, female) who got into NYU with that score and lower GPA albeit three years ago. It all depends on your kid’s total package, and of course luck of the draw. At any rate, 87th percentile with high GPA hardly seems destined for trade school. Please be careful to support your kid and not give them a complex. |
| OP, apply to some safeties with an 80-90% acceptance. There are some both in VA and MD that fit the bill. She will probably get in somewhere else, but you have to include actual safeties. |
She'll have her options for a decent education so don't worry. As far as trade school option goes, if interested, she can easily earn more than an average college grad or more if she works for herself so she can set her own hours. |
| Jesus. 87th percentile and people are saying she can’t go to college?! We |
| WVU or Elon |
Yes! And earn more with valuable skills. 😃 |
| Also have your DC Try the ACT. My Dd had a sub 1300 sat and didn’t want to take it again. I convinced her to take the ACT and she got a 30 first and only try which got her into her first choice school with a similar GPA as yours. |
Clemson likely not an option. |
