Thanks for starting discussion! I posted separately and it was combined here for obvious reasons… if you want to help move the needle more send me an email at lefttovote@gmail.com … I’m working on filing the paperwork for a 501c4 political non profit

Curious, what will your org do to help "move the needle"?

I am genuinely curious. I just checked out your FB page

For now mostly spreading the word via social media.

Once it’s an official non profit we can raise money and put up some ads and signs where all the politicians do to further spread the message to those that didn’t see it on social media.

Long term goals involve open primaries or non partisan local elections (like the BoE where everyone can vote) as well as supporting measures that increase voter turnout.

Well not be directly working with or supporting any campaigns

The other theory is to have a landing page that people can point too with evidence about why it makes sense instead of individuals having to explain to everyone why this makes sense.

I have been Independent for years and will be switching to Dem before the next election to vote Elrich out.

She was pretty bog standard Republican: anti-gay, etc.

So back then, there were no absolutes among the parties. You had pro-choice and anti-choice in both parties, for example.
She was endorsed by the Log Cabin Republicans, and I don't think that would have happened if she was anti-gay.

You may want to check her vote on DOMA.

39% of registered voters (about 2 in 5) are not registered Democrat.

Despite this, 100% of our elected officials over the past 18+ years have been those selected in the Democratic Primary.

If you want to make your vote count, you must register as a Democrat before June 5!

The fact someone is 'unaffiliated' doesn't mean they are centrist.

The vast majority of MoCo residents support Democratic candidates. Why would they not want elected officials who reflect their ideological beliefs.

Huge difference between traditional Democrats and the progressives.

There's also a big difference between traditional Democrats and "centrists".

The reality, whether you like it or not, is MoCo is heavily left leaning. And many of us who are certainly not The Squad-style Dems also are very happy to elect Democratic politicians and desire policies that are left leaning.

I"m no fan of the lunatic left. However, the corrective measures I want vis-a-vis that faction are still grounded in left-leaning policies.

The problem in this county is that the different Democratic factions adopt different combinations of “lunatic left” policies and moderate policies. As a result, there is never a direct referendum on lunatic left versus moderate policies. The elections are about which combination of policies address your priorities while minimizing what you don’t like. It would be a lot easier if there was a direct referendum of an Eric Adams type candidate against an AOC type candidate. But at least for CE we never get that. We now how a lot of pure lunatic left candidates running for county council. Anyone who’s a moderate should fear their success.

I am so much in tune with this thread.

I have been a life long Independent who switched to Democrat just to vote for Chris Van Hollen in the Senate primary. I have been debating to switch back to Independent every since. I've been trying to vote out the hyperbolic in the primaries ever since, but finding sensible, realistic politicians who are more interested in policy and results than clicks has been a grind. 2022 will most likely be my breaking point. This country is quickly sinking into 2 choices: AOC and Trump. Both are horrible (though one is more perilous than the other).

If these are the only 2 options, we are doomed.

Meanwhile, I have lived most of 50 years of life in Montgomery County and have seen it grow and change tremendously over the years. Sadly, the past 20 years have been a slow, but steady decline culminating in this past year being one of the most violent and crime ridden in decades. At the same time, what used to be a shining school on a hill, MCPS is backsliding into a morass. All under the iron tight control of a clique of political activists and sociology professors pretending to be politicians.

They are able to do this mostly due to apathy. Most people do not vote. Especially in local elections. The MoCo squad knows and loves this. They can pass all kinds of crazy legislation without so much as a whimper of opposition. Have you noticed all those bike lanes going up that no one uses? That's just one example of a tiny minority completely gaming the system to their whims.

Can't blame 'em. It's there for the taking. And they sure as hell take it.

I'm not much of a political guy, but it is time to break this iron fist of lunacy before this county hits rock bottom. Please tell me that there are some people out there who just want safe streets, quality schools, decent roads to drive on, financial solvency and not a laundry list of pilot programs that are suspect, at best.

It's well past time to organize. Tell me where to meet up!

Sorry OP, the reaction of conservatives to this pandemic has turned me from a moderate republican into a liberal democrat.

Almost everyone did vote for it, and Clinton signed it. Elijah Cummings voted for it. 96 was a different time.

I think there’s a ton of people who want what you want. The problem is as you said apathy… very few care enough to actually do the research. And unfortunately also there are not a ton of options for who to vote for.

My advice is get involved in local politics and try to get others as well. I’ve been doing it - it’s not easy - but has resulted in many more paying attention. An easy site to send people to is lefttovote.org which has the registration link as well as the arguments for why this makes sense.
