Montgomery country schools

Former resident. If I were to do it again I would look where the politicians send their kids. So look up the county council (if they have kids) etc. You will likely find them all going to the one protected cluster -- that doesn't have any changes planned for them in the near term. Takoma Park Middle feeding into Blair High School magnet (if you can). It is REALLY hard to get into that program coming from another place -- remember it's a club. Overall when you talk about MCPS you have to quote Orwell: 'all pigs are equal, some pigs are more equal than others.'

This is a great point. They have their own CES, protected seats for TPMS magnet and then the Blair magnet. It’s not an accident. The other politicians, like Jawando, send their kids to private.

Those neighborhoods can be expensive, so as a second bet you can either look at Rockville feeding into Richard Montgomery HS or Silver Spring feeding into Montgomery Blair HS. Both also good schools.

All schools in Montgomery County are diverse. Some are more diverse than others.

Boundary maps around Kensington are going to be redrawn in a few years when a new HS opens. I would focus on being in a neighborhood you like as school assignments are not set in stone.

Most likely WJ students would go to Woodward. I understand that some Einstein neighborhoods want to go to Woodward too but I guess that depends on the politics. Kensington doesn’t have the same clout that it used to.

That is the reason Woodward is being reopened, to relieve overcrowding at WJ and the DCC schools, mainly Einstein and Wheaton. It's not about any neighborhood "wanting to go to Woodward."

That’s not the reason. You have been posting this same nonsense for a long time.

It literally is the reason:

"Reopening of Woodward High School is required to address the urgent space needs at Walter Johnson High School and the Downcounty Consortium high schools."

Yes, it was a clear effort at disinformation. But for what reason? I can't figure that one out, unless it's just a regular or pro troll.

You Woodward is for DCC people are weird and bizarre. Be prepared to be very disappointed.

A couple of fact checks here. First, the situation you are describing predates any of the existing council members. Some of them may not have even been born when Blair became a magnet high school. Second, there are no set-asides for the Blair magnet, which means it is equally "easy" or "hard" to get in from anywhere else. It's hard to get into the Blair magnet period. Even for Takoma Park kids.

Third, the Council is more diverse geographically than you give it credit for. Of the current members who have kids, Alboroz lives in Kensington (and graduated from Whitman), Hucker lives in Silver Spring, Jawando moved to Bethesda, Navarro lives in Silver Spring, and only Reimer lives in Takoma Park.

It's not a conspiracy. It's just that Silver Spring is about half of the county, and affordable to public servants. It's also why a lot of federal workers live there.

For the OP - where are you commuting? People will have better advice if you share your commute and your general price range. If you are just asking in general about MCPS schools, I can say I've been pretty happy with them. It's a big and frustrating system sometimes, and the current interim superintendent is in over her head, but overall my kids have received an excellent education and I'd happily move here again.

Takoma park is the middle school stem magnet for MC along with Roberto Clemente. About 40% of them get into Blair. But again they are from all over the county.

The fact that local catchments like Takoma Park and Potomac have preferential probability to be selected for an enhanced program, like a Center for Enriched Studies, a criteria-based math magnet or a Chinese immersion program, is an inequitable abomination in a public school system.

Maybe OP is a troll since they are not offering any other info. The only thing they will get is the usual DCUM MCPS bickering about boundaries etc.

Entirely possible. Probable, even!

Depends on your commute really. Will you be working in DC? If not, I'd suggest you look up-county. These down-county people have no idea how diverse it actually is, and you can also get more house for your money. Apparently diversity only applies to race; not income, on this forum. I'd tour Wooton, Richard Montgomery, Poolesville, maybe even Clarksburg. Keep in mind though that the BOE is naturally biased against Upcounty schools.

TPMS is an overrated toxic school, and Blair is, by all accounts, overcrowded, and had a ton of issues. We listened to the hype and bought into the cluster. It is this experience that encourages me to encourage you not to buy into the hype.

There are other magnet programs for high school and most of them are at other high schools. Look there.

Let's face it. Half the posters on here are Realtors trying to angle for the area they sell.

First and foremost, Woodward is being built to reduce ridiculous levels of overcrowding at WJ that will take it to nearly 3700 students in just a few years. But if that was the only issue, MCPS would not be building Woodward. However, there is a need to also accommodate additional students that would be generated from the massive amount of approved development along the 355 corridor. If they have any seats left after that, may be they will give them to DCC on a special basis. But I doubt it. Your weird belief that it’s somehow about BCC is very strange. It’s about what is being planned near the Strathmore and White Flint metros and everything in between. 5,000 housing units have been approved at just the White Flint Mall site and Strathmore Metro stations combined. You have a weird fixation that is going to get sorely disappointed in the end.

Woodward is being built to relieve overcrowding at WJ and the DCC. Or are you lobbying for a wholesale boundary change here?

Yeah it’s really weird for people to believe that the DCC will be a part of Woodward’s future make-up, since the only official word on the subject specifically states that Woodward will alleviate overcrowding at WJ and in the DCC. WJ is overcrowded but not so overcrowded that it needs to lose half of its students, there will be enough room at Woodward to alleviate WJs overcrowding, some of the DCCs overcrowding (mainly Einstein’s), and allow for these housing units that may materialize at White Flint and be full of school age kids (we’ve been waiting years on that WF development and nothing has been done so I wouldn’t hold your breath on that).
