APS Thursday

If it is icy, then some of the hilly streets are treacherous. Kids should not be on buses and they shouldn't be walking along roads with no sidewalks in those kinds of conditions to get to school because it is too dangerous.

It would be horrifying if a child was killed when we knew at least 12 hours in advance that the conditions could / will be dangerous.

Yup. I think they've been more cautious ever since that bus crashed on a snowy morning. I don't blame them!

There hasn’t

Is the teacher out sick? Or taking care of a sick family member? You sound kind. Your 5 yo will be fine, even with an assistant. Unbelievable.

We've decided we won't participate with virtual school. (kids are in 1st and 4,th grade). It the next time is a virtual day, we won't attempt to partake.

If there’s good snow we will play outside at will. If there’s no snow, I won’t help or hinder the process for my 1st grader. Up to him whether he does it.

Who closes school for a bit of cold rain? Ugh.

We won’t encourage participation in future virtual days for our 1st grader, though we will let him know it’s an option and if he chooses to log on, cool

Sigh, I had forgotten that. School isn't childcare, except for teachers.

Exactly. And if their childcare falls through then they get a taxpayer paid day off while the rest of us burn leave or scramble to find alternative arrangements.

How would I know? APS doesn't share that information with parents. Just another day in the pandemic. No subs. No teacher. No school. Shrug.

What you are failing to see is that APS is reacting to teachers using their leave as needed. You can’t compare your office drone job that can go on with or without you for a day. If you aren’t there and take a day of leave your company can still operate without you. It’s not APS school staff fault that teachers are using their earned leave for childcare when other districts close which then puts APS in a bind and unable to operate because they can’t operate with less than a certain number of staff to supervise kids. Then APS has to make a decision on if they can operate.

And we can’t act like decisions of other counties, especially one as large as FCPS with over 180,000 students, won’t impact APS which is tiny comparatively. A large portion of APS staff lives in Fairfax and Alexandria.

What annoys me, is what bulls—r this narrative is. FCPS closes all the time, and we open. Last Thursday was because those absences, combined with CoVID absences, were too many. Is it really impossible that today is about the weather?!
