APS Thursday

Anonymous
I hate that I am even having to make this post, but with the rumor that FCPS has already called for a virtual snow day due to them having an early release what do we think are the odds that APS will close or have a 2 hour delay tomorrow?

I know the forecast is tricky with the potential snow coming during rush hour.

I think that rumor has been confirmed. I am hoping for merely a 2-hr delay since we didn't have a prescheduled early release (that I know of, at least).

FCPS has called it. It's on their webpage. I fully expect APS will do something similar.

FCPS Operating Status for January 20, 2022
Due to the weather forecast calling for snow in the early morning, all Fairfax County Public Schools’ students will participate in virtual learning on Thursday, January 20. Students will have synchronous (teacher-led) instruction with a two-hour delay for middle schools and high schools. All elementary schools will begin at 10:30 a.m. During this delay, please ensure that your instructional device is charged, and that you are able to access Schoology and Zoom links.

With so many APS teachers residing in Fairfax, it really depends not just on the weather but how many teachers will call out.

Sigh, I had forgotten that. School isn't childcare, except for teachers.

I bet APS will do a 2-hour delay.

But also, the school systems' response to weather around here will just never normalize for me. It's insanity.

Yeah, I’m afraid that if covid teacher absences are still common (I haven’t been tracking, aside from my kids’ teachers), that + Fairfax resident teachers taking leave tomorrow will = closure for APS. Unless there has been an influx of new subs that I’m not aware of.

How does it help the teachers if they have to do virtual school?

On some level, I bet that is far worse for them. Acting like they're all just going to pivot to virtual school tomorrow when they haven't done it this year yet seems a bit optimistic.

I wonder why they bother with a 2 hour delay if it’s virtual anyway?

I predict APS announces a 2 hr delay around 5 am, if the forecast holds.
Though, since CWG says the worst is expected from 8-10 am, it could be a closure, since a 2 hr delay for middle school puts buses on the roads smack dab in the middle of that time. Sigh.

Annoyed parent here, I do feel for the teachers as I know this isn't the preferred teaching mode for many, especially with almost no notice. It just sucks all around.

I am still hoping we *only* get a 2-hr delay.

I'm a teacher and hope we stay open- a 2 hour delay is fine but no one wants to go virtual for snow days, no one.

APS has already shown they can't open if FCPS isn't open (see snafu of 1/6). We will be closed too.

Agree. Though...we do have the option of one more snow day, so I think that a virtual day is off the table for now. It'll either be a delay or a total snow day.

Closed or virtual? FCPS is virtual.

I only know what's true at my school but we had way more staff out for COVID on 1/6 than right now. Hopefully we can cover the absences this time.
