Yikes - Kelly Ernby dies of COVID

Brief illness but was never hospitalized and was at home. Could she have been saved if she was hospitalized? Why are they not checking for clots or giving blood thinners etc?

Could she have been hiding the fact that she had COVID?

why do you say that?

If she felt well enough to garden, it wasn't C*vid that killed her.

This is so sad and such a waste. Kelly and I were friends - former colleagues at Gibson Dunn - and I was completely shocked when I found out that she had died. I saw the story in the media before I saw posts from our many mutual friends on my Facebook page.

Kelly was opposed to COVID vaccine mandates and to other COVID restrictions (particularly beach closures in SoCal in 2020) throughout the pandemic. She was very vocal about those positions on Facebook and, no doubt, elsewhere. But believe me when I say that she was not a mindless Trump follower. She was smart, accomplished, and passionate. But ultimately misguided, and that has come with tragic consequences.

Kelly and I were poles apart politically and on COVID issues, but she was a good, decent person. Hard-working, committed to seeking justice for victims of crime (she was a Deputy DA in Orange County, CA), and genuinely compassionate. She was also loyal, had a great sense of humor, and was tons of fun to be around.

It's worth remembering that behind the public image of every "political" COVID casualty, there is a real person with family and friends. I am astounded that there are still people who refuse to get vaccinated (and Kelly was not vaccinated according to her husband, Mattias), but I take no pleasure if and when something terrible happens to those people. It's a tragedy every time. This one just happens to hit close to home for me.

RIP, Kelly. Gone much too soon. You'll be missed.

I looked like the victim of a violent crime. Damaged my heart and of course all the aspirin I started popping probably saved me but it was the most surreal time of my life. There was no guidance at that time about anything. Feb 2020. I was one of the first people to get it. Got it from my neighbor who had come back from international travel and did not quarantine.

Anxiety-ridden, snowflakey DCUMers love to overuse the word "scary". What you describe is the real thing.

Was she on birth control? I see this happening a lot to women who are on birth control either after vaccination or after contracting Covid.

Did she encourage other people not to get vaccinated?

Omicron is milder, much more contagious, many people are asymptomatic and vaccine and booster will not prevent you from getting it. Delta is more dangerous and it kills, but vaccine stops it.

If she was unvaccinated, Delta probably got her and killed her. If she got omicron she probably would survived even if she was unvaccinated,

Agreed. It was a blood clot. Plenty of people die of those everyday and have for 100 plus years.

That was very nice.

She may have been smart, but she made a very stupid decision about her health.

I am so sorry for your loss. A cautionary tale that even the smart and decent people can be misguided. If you don't want to vaccinate, then I guess you just have to become a recluse and mask extremely carefully. You cannot be going to rallies with mostly unvaxxed and unmasked Trump supporters. The truly evil GOP anti-vaxxers are probably all vaxxed and stocked up on the expensive meds secretly.

So much denial and deflection on this thread. She was not vaccinated, she actively tried to discourage vaccines and keep the pandemic going, she had Covid and died from its complications.

Sorry for the loss of your friend, PP. It seems so weird and tragic that an intelligent person would refuse to get vaccinated, but hopefully this will help some other people realize that it’s not a political issue at the very end of the day.
