I'm middle class and not living in the DC area anymore (raised there and couldn't afford a nice quality of life). We did not buy the most expensive home and also focus our money around travel and find budget ways to travel. A lot of people on here don't camp, using camping cabins, and will say, "that's a trip, not a vacation". We don't have a nanny nor can we pay for someone to travel with us and care for our kids or pay luxury costs to pay for an expensive resort with childcare. I scour the web to find destinations and then plan as far ahead as I can to find the cutest, most affordable airbnbs. Acadia National park- VRBO overloooking a harbor $1,000 1 bedroom+ loft for a week. Camping cabin $600 for a week. Buy fresh lobster and cook at home. Adirondacks, $1200 for a week mostly inclusive. VA beach? First Landing state park, tent camp for like $30 a night or rent a cabin. You can create awesome vacations on a smaller budget, you just have to be more creative!

It's not a problem for you to just miss two weeks of work in the summer? Or for your kids to miss two weeks of camp or summer school or whatever they're doing? My job can somewhat be done online, but my boss would be pissed if I just didn't show up for two weeks because I insisted on unnecessary international travel. |

Spring: long weekend in NYC if covid numbers drop enough
June: camping on Assateague July: a few work trips, I hope; I'm ready to start work travel back up again! August: New England, and maybe a Shenandoah camping trip Fall: long weekend in New England and/or NYC Christmas: New England I'd also like to go to Mississippi for my family's annual 4th of July reunion, but I have a commitment in DC right before the 4th, so I don't think I'll be able to make it. We'll probably try to go down to MS/New Orleans in late May or early June. We're also planning at some point to take a 3-week Dec/Jan trip to Vietnam. It was originally planned for 2020, but... We're not optimistic for 2022, so I think we're just going to plan (hope) for 2023. We don't do a lot of overseas travel, and we'd been planning this for a while (it would be my husband's first time back since he left as a very small child in 1975), so we were so sad when the pandemic upset all of our plans. |

San Diego next week
Possibly Hawaii in March We will take from there |
|
-Leaving for southern Florida next week
-Visiting parents in Tucson and Sedona in March -Scotland and Ireland in June -back to Florida the day after Christmas with adult kids That's as far as I've planned. We usually spend most of the summer at our lake home anyway. |

All of these people who have six or seven trips planned a year,
Agree that you are rich or have a lot of time on your hands or both. I have one- two weeks vacation for the summer, One of those weeks really being a family visit more than a vacation, and we visit family again at Christmas. We may have a few weekend trips in the spring or fall and that’s it. Agree to just not get skewed by the responses on here that everyone is going to Aspen or Italy every 1-2 months. |

Arizona for 10 days in early May.
Coastal MA in August We are thinking of Italy in December. Quite likely we'll go somewhere and Italy is the first choice but haven't made bookings yet. We got used to not doing much travelling and I came to realize I'd prefer to stay home rather than take mini breaks involving flights and airports, not because of COVID but because airports and flights are such a hassle. |
I am a sahm. Dh takes about 4 weeks of vacation per year- spring, winter and 2 weeks summer. I take trips with kids solo. Sometimes Dh joins us. Sometimes not. I also like to go away with my friends, maybe 1-3 per year. |
| Zero. Maybe a cabin lake getaway |

Florida over January break
Florida over spring break Santa Fe New Mexico in July St Thomas in August |
I mean, you can’t go to work if you have covid so it doesn’t matter if you are abroad or at home. Would try to log in remotely if symptoms are mild. And no, it wouldn’t be an issue for child to miss summer camp. Obviously we would take the financial hit for that, but there’s always a risk your child is too sick for camp. |
Yes to the bolded. I can't figure out why people harp on the work piece, when you can't go to work with covid anyways, or you shouldn't. |
Not rich. HHI is $300k. I’m a teacher so there’s time for trips since I’m also off during the long weekends and winter break and summer. My husband has flexible schedule and can work from anywhere if needed so it works. |

I lost you at “not rich. Hhi is 300k”
