Should we prepare for virtual schooling starting in January?

It seems likely. The irony being the same people who will complain the loudest are more often than not those who helped create this situation by not taking the pandemic seriously.

Yes. I see so many posts saying "I am DONE with Covid, I don't care, I'm socializing and not wearing a mask unless required to do so", and in the same post, swear "There'll be he!! to pay if schools shut down again!!!!".

It's... like... they're... DUMB.

It would be amusing if it came without excess mortality.

Seriously.

NEW POST: Delta variant running wild! They’re going to close schools!
Poster: Nope. Hogan needs to give the green light on that and he won’t. Plus virtual days don’t count toward the required 180 instruction days.

NEW POST: Hospitals are nearing capacity! We need to shut down schools!

NEW POST: Omg Omicron! Schools need to go virtual!
Poster: Nope. Hogan needs to give the green light on that and he won’t. Plus virtual days don’t count toward the required 180 instruction days.

NEW POST: All colleges and private schools moving to virtual. MCPS is next!

You can't meaningfully control this virus with behavior. Not sure why you don't see that by now. But you apparently don't so this seems to be a particularly challenging concept for you.

If schools shut down, it won't be because your neighbor decided not to wear a mask where/when it wasn't required.

Also, this time, if schools shut down, schools better be the LAST thing shut down, not the first.

Which colleges have announced virtual for spring? I know several have recently switched to virtual until after the winter break, but haven’t heard of any going beyond that.

The answer is NONE. I follow these things and was shocked by the statement and so went to a couple of reliable industry sources and the answer is NONE. DCUM posters rarely let the facts get in the way of their postings.

And if it gets really bad, the whole system will switch to virtual, which at least will be clear and we'll know where we stand re: work. It's easier to negotiate leave when you can point to the news and the official system-wide email, versus trying to explain that "my daughter's grade just went virtual for two weeks". And then "oh, now my son's grade just went virtual for two weeks". And then "sorry, my preschooler has Covid". Yeah. Bosses will love that.

While everything else stays open? Nope. We did that already. This time around, EVERYTHING ELSE needs to close before schools close.

You still don't get it.
People won't decide when to close schools.
The virus will decide when to close schools.

You can swear until you're blue in the face that you'll still be sending your kid to school no matter what, but if he's stuck in a mixed-grade class with a sub who doesn't teach the syllabus, because too many students and teachers are out, you'll wish he was learning something in virtual.

I was going to post the same. I have not heard of any colleges posting plans for the spring semester yet.

Schools aren’t going to close. Expect restaurants, extracurricular stuff and everything else to close first.

We might have individual school closures but that might be rare.

Omicron doesn't care about behavior. It's getting everybody.

We've seen the results. It won't happen

If there are enough kids completely out of school, you might see the sentiment on that change. Virtual school isn't as good as in-person, but it's better than literally nothing.

Not for my elementary-aged kids. Virtual school is VERY stressful for them (and our family generally), which impacts both current and future learning. No, thanks. I'd rather them take a year or whatever off entirely, hit pause, and come back to it when they can be in person.

There is no good reason for schools to go virtual. If MCPS does that, I hope the state steps in and I hope parents raise bloody hell.
