Anyone else worried about winter concerts?

Our middle school had ours last week. It was fantastic! So glad for a sense of normality even with kids playing through their masks and their instruments with bell covers.

Best band concert ever!

My HS kid did their band, honors band, and private studio concerts that way last year. I cannot tell you how happy they were to be able to play in person with their ensemble this fall. There's something energizing about playing music with other people, and it was completely missing for them all last year. They felt like they were playing into a void half the time.

That said, if someone had offered me the chance back in the day to skip the sweaty elementary school gym and the 1,427 squeaky clarinets, I'd have taken them up on it in a heartbeat.
the squeaky clarinets! Ouch! What did you play?

I was talking about sitting through my kid’s concerts! I swear every kid in that band played either the clarinet or the flute. First time my tiny kid had to haul their trombone on the school bus, we figured out why.

My kid’s high school has a non-instructional day on Fri, art of which will be winter co certs. It’s the stupidest idea ever - just exposing kids to significantly increased risk at the precise time when a week later they will be visiting with relatives.

I am telling my kid not to go. Also, unless it they keep seating charts, there will be no way to notify or contact trace.

Most 16 & 17 year olds aren’t boosted yet or if they are, insufficient time has passed to develop adequate antibodies from the booster.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Our HS did a good job spreading things out - chorus on a different day than band, bands only did 2 numbers, Break between band and orchestra concert for people to clear out. But our middle school hasn’t done nearly as much.

I know that's appealing but kids could be blasting covid into a room by blowing into their instruments. This could be a superspreader.

This cannot be MCPS. What is the difference? These kids play in person every day.

This.

Seriously. I am thrilled they are having a concert. I will wear my mask and happily go watch my kid.

I would be incredibly pissed if they implemented useless regulations like the other PP recommends.

OP, if you are concerned, just opt out.

No. You are welcome to opt out. They should definitely NOT be cancelled.

That is SO sad.

Especially strings. The kids can easily play with masks on. My kid plays the violin and was so bummed to have everything cancelled last year.

+1 million

They sounded terrible back in September, but so much better now.

Playing your trumpet at home on your computer is SO incredibly depressing.

Given that it hasn't spreadered at all since September, it seems unlikely that it will somehow superspreader now.

Our MCPS high school split the concert into two this year to reduce the crowd sizes. I worked both the concerts and was impressed by the adherence to masks from the audience.
As a parent of a band kid, I am so happy they are allowing concerts to go on. Last year they made accommodations for sports and ignored everyone else— grossly unfair. So yeah, let’s use some of our risk for the band. The concerts were awesome!

When everyone is masked, including the musicians, and the instruments are covered with BELL COVERS?! How is anything "blasted"?

MCPS high schools are reporting spikes in covid this week. HoCo cancelled indoor sports today.
Privates are going virtual. Oh

God help us if that kid with the tuba has covid.
