The problem is a culture of crime and violence in the surrounding community.

This! They would just rob them at knife point instead.

That kid is dead. Not coming back. Trade the gun for a knife and he's alive. Get it now?

You are such an idiot, truly. Knives kill just as people with guns kill. No, he would not necessarily be alive if the weapon of choice were a knife. Go away gun control free show! This is about the violence and culture of violence, taking away a gun won't teach people how to behave differently and to respect others lives and property.

I've definitely had that talk a few times with my DD who goes to college in NYC.

Thanks for the reminder.

My kid is a sophmore living off campus (not at Temple) and has to briefly walk through an iffy area. He was home for Thanksgiving and I asked him if he's ever run into problems. He said once two older women (not college students, he thought they were at least mid 30's) approached him and asked if he had any chewing tobacco, but that's it. When he told them he didn't they left him alone (thankfully.)
I didn't think to talk about what he should do if they didn't just go away peacefully...I will definitely bring that up.

For what exactly? A stained sweatshirt and an old iphone? I don't even see how much they can possibly get from these kids to have this be worth while.

Laptops, airpods, iphones,..

Show me one example of someone robbing a kid for AirPods. AirPods are pretty worthless without the charger. Not to mention I doubt there is a second hand market for nasty used earpods with ear wax all over them.

That said, AirPods are a visual signal the person likely has more expensive items in their possession.

I'm not the PP you quoted but here you go

At Harvard a couple years ago. Took me all of 5 seconds to do a google search and find.

So an example from 3 years ago when they were new? Okay, hardly makes it a trend. They simply aren't worth anything used. Like I said, I think they do visually signal you're possibly a wealthy college kid, likely distracted, and with other more expensive Apple products in your possession. But they are not THE target.

December 2019 a freshman gal at Columbia/Barnard was robbed by tweens with a knife, stabbed, and died steps from campus:

Hey, look, ten seconds on Google and you're demonstrably wrong: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2017/crime-in-the-u.s.-2017/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-11.xls What a surprise, since you sound so level-headed and factually grounded....

When I was in Boston as an undergrad, there was a fellow student knifed to death for a leather jacket.

Temple is a great campus, but the surrounding area is pretty bad.

I grew up just outside Philly. I know of multiple people who were mugged or had their apartments broken into at Temple. I had a full ride for undergrad to Temple (early 2000s) and a scholarship for law school and I turned them down both times. Temple is a great school in a bad spot and it's getting worse.

This is horrific.

Have you researched the numerous federal, state and local laws governing the ownership, transport and lawful use of firearms in Philadelphia?

Didn’t think so.

I’m anti-gun, but these incidents aren’t prompted by guns.

It’s standard thievery: mugging, assault, etc.

This will happen with or without guns (think: knives, hammers, fists). This happens all over Europe where they don’t have guns and simply use knives or hammers.

Candidly, I’m worried that the current racial and economic climate are fueling these incidents. And “rich” college kids are easy targets.

Sorry, guns are much more lethal. And can kill quickly, without physical proximity.

You don't hear of dozens of people being murdered at once with fists or knives.

And this thread involves the close range murder of a single individual, doubtless by a soulless criminal degenerate who should not have been on the street.

Actually, being armed and aware is far better than leaving your life in the hands of a criminal sociopath.

Have you ever looked at post-crime/autopsy photos of a knife victim?
