For what exactly? A stained sweatshirt and an old iphone? I don't even see how much they can possibly get from these kids to have this be worth while.

Laptops, airpods, iphones,..

The problem is a culture of crime and violence in the surrounding community.

This! They would just rob them at knife point instead.

I’m anti-gun, but these incidents aren’t prompted by guns.

It’s standard thievery: mugging, assault, etc.

This will happen with or without guns (think: knives, hammers, fists). This happens all over Europe where they don’t have guns and simply use knives or hammers.

Candidly, I’m worried that the current racial and economic climate are fueling these incidents. And “rich” college kids are easy targets.

College kids do not get robbed and killed much in Europe. Have you lived there?

Lisbon, Madrid, Milan, bologna, Leipzig, Zurich, Vienna….

….public safety is one of the largest differences between us and Europe. There is a latent layer of violence and deviancy in the us that hangs like a cloud that is no where near the issue in Europe.

OMG. This is exactly how I feel! When we traveled to Canada and took the local train around in Montreal, I felt as safe as I did in my home country. Always feel like you need to be alert and watch your back in the US.

Let's outsource criminal justice to Saudi Arabia or even the Taliban for a couple of years. I'm sure it would make a great diff. to society.

College students are soft targets.

Soft targets they are. And almost always rich, with a few $20s in cash, credit cards, newest iPhone, new MacBook laptop...maybe also wearing a $1,000 designer parka.

Show me one example of someone robbing a kid for AirPods. AirPods are pretty worthless without the charger. Not to mention I doubt there is a second hand market for nasty used earpods with ear wax all over them.

That said, AirPods are a visual signal the person likely has more expensive items in their possession.

Sorry, guns are much more lethal. And can kill quickly, without physical proximity.

You don't hear of dozens of people being murdered at once with fists or knives.

I can almost guarantee you this kid wasn't rich. It's all just so senseless.

I was mugged in 1985 at Temple. I was a commuter student. It has always been horrible area and getting worse. Philly has now had over 500 murders. The most since 1990. Great school though......

And I was poor growing up. Didn't matter. A woman attacked and mugged me and got the whopping $ 10 I had. They don't care if you are a student or not. Not sure she knew I was a student or a worker at Temple.

It's a good time to remind your college kids (or kids in general) that struggling with a robber is never a good idea. No items are worth more than their lives.

I've definitely had that talk a few times with my DD who goes to college in NYC.

Anything that can be sold that's not a phone.

That kid is dead. Not coming back. Trade the gun for a knife and he's alive. Get it now?
