Right now they should be more concerned with teacher burnout. It's real. And while other surrounding counties are doing things to accommodate the mental health and well-being of their teachers, MCPS is piling on more responsibility.

You know, while I agree that MCPS needs to be concerned about the mental health and well-being of their teachers, that's a little rich given neither they nor the teacher's unions gave a damn about the mental health and well-being of their *students* last year. "KIDS ARE RESILIENT!!!" "SCHOOL ISN'T DAYCARE!!!!"

No one who actually knows anything about kids and/or mental health is surprised right now.

So you know every teacher in MCPS, and you know in fact that none of them cared about their students' mental health? None of them made accommodations for their students because they care and realized we were living through a pandemic?

TF out of here.

The union which represents teachers sure didn’t give a crap.

Awesome. Thanks for the last minute notice, yet again, MCPS.

It’s great for us working moms who have to physically go into work.

As always, thanks for the adequate notice so that we can scramble to make arrangements.

DP

Is this for real? What do you think burnout is like in other professions? Nurses, truck drivers, law enforcement, retail, restaurant workers? Anyone who has been working in person during this pandemic. Are teachers somehow more ‘special’?

Teachers worked from home for over a year.

And for many, including myself, it was exponentially harder than coming into school.

So you’d rather have two half days this week than the week of Thanksgiving?

The way for MCPS to tackle this problem would have been to increase substitute teacher pay and increase their pool of subs.

Remind me who sets substitute teacher pay?

Fortunately it was already an early release.

Why is there a rent increase moratorium right now when we can't pay for subs? Is holding taxes lower the way to pay for more subs? Landlords pay more profits taxes into the county when rents are high, not low. There are donkeys in charge of this area!

Would you feel more comfortable if you child sat in the gymcafetorium with 300 other kids watching movies the whole day? I’d rather mine were with me.

I love that.

Yes, school is not daycare. They don't have enough subs. Maybe you could hire a teacher or sub who won't be working that day to babysit.

Most of the people willing to work as subs would benefit from a rent increase moratorium. Making MoCo unaffordable is not a good way to increase the pool of subs.

All of those professions are all seeing record retirements and resignations as well. It’s not just teachers that are burnt out and complaining.

It looks like they’re not planning to “make up” this day. They usually set aside two as a buffer for snow days. Now we’re down to one. Reading between the lines, they may throw the kids one snow day, and the rest may be virtual. Purely speculation but there it is.
