The amount of Gonzaga Hs gear I see on the homeless. 😂 |
| Her dad was relatively stable and offered her a clean, safe place to stay, with backup care for Maddy when she was sick. I kept waiting for there to be strings attached or for him to be a monster. But her only reason for moving out was a realization that YEARS PAST when he was an alcoholic, he hit her mother. He's now sober, a Christian, and keeps on her ex boyfriend to get him to go to AA meetings. I think she was crazy for turning down his help. She should have done almost anything to stay with him and his wife who also seemed kind and stable. |
^^^ who TF thinks like this? |
I completely agree with this. I think it’s just people and liberal shows hating on born again Christians mostly. |
| Very stressful to watch. Two wrong turns and this could have been me. I’m from the same place and SES. |
Whyyyy didn’t she go with her dad? She has quite a few people trying to help her out- dad, Nate, Regina. |
| I watched the entire thing. Thought it was excellent. Andie MacDowell is annoying, but that is the intent. It is stressful to watch, but important to watch to understand what a lot of people have to deal with. |
| Still watching and loving it! I’m also a single mom and found her desperation so relatable. |
I agree with this and I am a lefty, feminist, atheist. There was stability there. The child was young, you could shape their values differently down the line, but she was in dire straits and this was a place to land for a bit. I do think it kind of goes with the theme though; she's not equipped to do this, had a kid too young, is repeating family patters across generations, and is so just stumbling around like a lot of aimless 25 year olds who can't figure out their lives. Her stakes are just so much higher with a kid in tow. |
Why did she leave her abusive spouse and go to a person that hit her mom? Do you think sober people don’t hit people? Do you think Christians don’t abuse people? |
Plenty of fast food places have signs up saying, "Start today, get paid today," or things along those lines. It seems like she took the very worst job possible without even seeing what else was available. |
I don’t think it’s set in the incredibly unusual labor market of post pandemic 2021. Usually you don’t instantly get paychecks. And jobs want some experience/skills, even fast food. |

I found Andie McDowell to be really overacting and I'm wondering if she was determined to show that she can really act, after years of people calling her "wooden." I actually never thought she was a wooden actress, just soft-spoken and quiet. The character of Alex's mother is just too much. We get it - she is mentally ill.
I like Margaret Qualley, but her nasally voice is annoying. |
But she does well to demonstrate that a mature adult with an illness is not a safe option for child care or really anything that requires commitment and dependability. This show is very well done. Difficult to watch but very good. |
I kept waiting for that part of the show -- where her dad who seemed kind and stable started being abusive towards his second wife -- but it never happened. The abuse happened in the past, when he was married to a woman with bipolar disorder, it seems? And when he was drinking. He seemed to have cleaned up his act and had a loving, stable home with a nice wife and two kids. She was in a desperate situation and had a stable home available to her. She should have stayed there until she got on her feet. Her dad wasn't abusive towards his current wife, kids, or grandkids. Under the circumstances it was the best option for her. |
