Midnight Mass

I finally watched this. Damn, I cried so hard at that last episode! If Samantha Sloyan doesn’t get an Emmy, she was robbed!! Amazing, batshit performance. A tuned out a few of the monologues, but most were pretty amazing.

It was interesting to me that no one ever mentioned the word “vampire” throughout the series. Lots of talk of religious beliefs but no mention of other supernatural phenomena. For me the best thing about the series is how it shows an overlap between mainstream religion and the kind of supernatural phenomena that most people dismiss. The questions it raises about where the line is between believable and good vs unbelievable and/or evil for the religious characters.

IMO, Bly Manor > Hill House > Midnight Mass

Did Bly Manor have kids dying? I know its probably a spoiler but I stopped because I really can't handle terrible things happening to kids and felt like it was coming after hte first episode.

Pretty weird PP can't imagine anyone thinking the series is sad. It is the sadness that makes it more than just a creepy vampire story, not the other way around.

I found Joe Collie and all his interactions with Lisa terribly sad, and honestly his entire storyline was so sad. Riley's storyline was incredibly sad, although in the end he was given a gift few others were of peace.

The scene with the Sherriff's son in the church made my heart literally clench in grief. I felt palpable sadness for that choice. And seeing them together in the end I felt incredible sadness but also of course tinged with relief that they found peace.

The miscarriage was heartbreaking, the sight of a mother refusing to accept that her son had died was heartbreaking, the sight of a man who wanted to give a gift realizing he had done something terrible was heartbreaking.

It was very sad. And the priests speech about how God must hear death the way you feel at the foot of a waterfall with each drop being a lost soul I felt was terribly sad and poignant.

I don't often lose sleep over a show but I genuinely was unsettled last night after finishing it. I think in the end this was a show about the flawed human condition but also about hope, striving for better, about how faith can be simply clothing you use to celebrate your goodness or hide your badness.

And now, SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But hey, something I feel hasn't been discussed here. Wannabe sissy spacek definitely killed the priest right? He was just like them, young and healed until he died in the rectory. She poisoned him like the she poisoned the dog (another terribly sad moment!). I think she didn't like that he was getting so much attention and literally tried to murder him and then was surprised when she had a resurrection on her hands.

I just finished and I LOVED it.

The performances were amazing. I felt really calm and happy at the end, oddly.

I was so mad at Ali for drinking the blood, but in the end he burned the church down and saved humanity, so I guess I forgive him.

Riley's last scene was so heartbreaking. "I tried my best". Wow.

So glad Riley's family all ended up being good people.

But they are in peril.

Loved it and loved the monologues! I get the vampire thing but it felt more like a show about the frailty of humans and the terrible things they will do in search of solace and safety. Loved when Riley’s mom said “we talk about heaven as this wonderful place but we are all scratching for extra moments here at the end” or something to that effect.

In the end, if you have young children and are disproportionately sensitive to this stuff, is it something you should watch?

That’s a hallmark of director Mike Flanagan’s style. His horror has spooks and ghouls, but it also includes human horrors which aren’t supernatural at all. I totally understand an earlier PP crying at the end. His work is as touching as it is scary.

I just binged through it last night and I would agree with your assessment. The last episode was just too much.
Funny however, I never considered a vampire, I always assumed a demon that acted like an angel under false pretenses. But I see the whole vampire thing now.
And yes Hamish Linklater’s performance was amazing. But I also think Samantha Sloyan aka Bev was outstanding.

Samantha Sloyan was so good that I have a hard time separating her from her character and don’t want her to win a thing! 😂

Good show. It’s not about vampires or even religion, per se. It’s about being content with what you have and how you contribute to life and how greed spoils and ruins all.

Greed? It’s about vampires messing with a priest who mistakes him for an angel. Where’s the greed (other than the line about Bev misusing church funds I just don’t see it)
