We mostly wore fitted tops tucked in with a short jacket—sometimes longer jackets.

Sometimes we wore baggy untucked blouses (with or without a jacket).

Sigh.

To make this look more current, I would wear a white tee and long, luxurious duster type sweater.

The look you’re describing with the long duster sweater is what we call “the Karen” around here. Please don’t wear that outfit.

I’m not that poster and I wouldn’t wear it with barrel leg jeans but please don’t come for my long cardigan sweaters. I am f—cking freezing all the time and want a bathrobe I can wear in public. Okay if it’s fitted black pants and a white tee? (Although how long does it need to be to be a duster? The ones I have are mid thighs length.).

If you're slim you can wear whatever you want. The problem with Karens is that they are frumpy.

I don’t care if I’m frumpy.

You much enjoy a longline vest. They are a lot less bulky.

Mid thigh is not a duster. A duster is the robe-like lengths.
