Friends telling my kid the list is ‘meh’ and to aim higher.

Where is your kid with similar stats applying to?

Your kid's friends, if they have similar stats, are more likely to attend UMD, VT, Pitt or Penn State than any <40% acceptance rate school. Credit to your kid for getting there 6 months early.

Doesn’t care much about where they go to school but friends are making it difficult with their attitude. My older kid with higher SAT 1550+ 15 APs was rejected from harvard, Stanford mit, Carnegie mellon etc. so this list for kid 2 seems more realistic to me

Don’t over correct based on your DC1’s experience with lottery schools.

Thanks for your reply. We’ll see if there is merit aid offered. We have budgeted for in state in VA, anything outside of has to be comparable to what we will pay here otherwise in state it is! Good luck to all!

Wow. This is almost identical to my senior’s list.

Mount Luigi is top choice.

more power to your kid for finding some realistic safeties and matches

+1 my son had similar stats and a similar list. Budget is also a factor. He wasn't getting merit aid at any reaches so not worth applying. He ended up very happy at VT. Fyi - lots of higher stats kids got waitlisted there, don't count on it as a safety.

People are really pessimistic on this board. It’s not supported by Scattergrams.

My DS is humanities orientated and does want a SLAC. 1520, 4.67, 8 APs, MCPS magnet. Looking at: W&M, Grinnell, Vassar, Oberlin, Kenyon, Wesleyan, etc. Possibly Emory.

As has been shared before, second tier SLAC's offer great merit aid. Just saying.

So we will have same targets as safeties

With that high of SAT, and a great GPA you can get plenty of merit aid. Especially at out of state publics.

Like University of Alabama? Any other that are actually worth considering?

Congrats, OP, on having a smart kid and a lot of good schools on the list!
My kid is at a magnet in MCPS. 1470 SAT, 4.5 wgpa. He’s starting with UMD-CP and St. Mary’s for in-state tuition. Then he added schools he’s interested in with good programs in his major where he’s a legacy (GW, Emory, American). Trying for Davidson and Richmond and William & Mary (although sounds like lots of DMV kids are also applying, so maybe he should look for similar schools with fewer applications). Looking for one or two more - Elon, perhaps? And then another reach or two, which I have mixed feelings about because we’re full pay and it’s not really worth the money. Maybe Tufts? Or a crazy high reach like Georgetown? But again, I don’t feel it’s really worth the $$, especially since he may do law school or grad school.
It’s hard to figure out the right mix of schools - good luck, everyone, and hang in there!

How are Georgetown and Tufts on different levels?
