How to verify divorce in Virginia

Anonymous
The records are sealed, but I don’t think the fact a case was filed is sealed. You could figure out what county it was in, go over to the courthouse, and ascertain that there was a divorce filing. You would not be able to ascertain the disposition, though.

Divorce is handled in the Circuit Court. I am not sure what infomration they can give you, but I would call the FC Clerk's Office and ask. They will be able to tell you what is and is not able to be made to the general public. FOr my work I have had to call them on numerous occasions (unrelated to what you are asking about) and they always answer the phone and are helpful.

Fairfax Circuit Court does not have online access. Most other jurisdictions in Virginia do. My Loudoun divorce is easily found on the Virginia Courts website.

You can get to Fairfax Circuit Court, just not using the same search engine as most other jurisdictions in VA.

Does OP want to see the actual hard copy decree or do they just want to see confirmation online that the divorce was granted?

Fairfax County opted out of having Circuit Court records being available online, so you have to contact, or go to the Court, directly.

A background check?

We do it for our tenants.

I assume you want to see if the guy ever actually divorced his wife or if they reconciled.

Not if he’s dating OP.

My DH’s divorce record is public on Ancestry.com. He was married in Virginia and divorced in Virginia. You should be able to look yours up.

The Library of Virginia partnered with Ancestry.com to provide access to some of the VA public records, so that might well be the place to go as well. Not sure how quickly items are available there, so if the divorce is somewhat recent, it might not be there.

I just gave it a shot on the VA library/ancestry page and it seems the records available there are only up through 2014 at this time. Plus, you have to sign up for ancestry.com to view whatever is there. But the date range for the records shows up on the search page after you fill in some information.

Be careful. If I were him and I found out you did this, I'd break it off with you because I'd conclude you were a lunatic.

Why not just have dinner to his house? Do you really think he’d have a fake residence? Have not dated in years but simple things like going or house, meeting friends or colleagues. Wouldn’t that be enough?

I agree.
