I had to google it, I have never even heard of this school. The scores are atrocious (8 - 10% proficiency), but if it is true that half the students don't show up on any given day, that's hardly a surprise.
I don't get why someone decided to make a documentary about this particular school. They could have picked a HS with more than 253 students, low scores, and still made a significant point about the quality of DCPS. |

Why not this school?
I'm looking forward to watching this documentary. |
Who knows? Perhaps they want to show what some schools have to deal with. Apparently, it will follow the hardships of some of the students and help the viewers understand exactly why some schools are having such a difficult time making the grade. Look at what they're working with. PBS will air a documentary about a high-performing school in NY that's attended by very rich students. I suspect the juxtaposition is to show just how unequal our education systems are in this country. I forgot the name of the NY documentary and don't know when it's set to air. |

FWIW, the description reads: Part 1 of 2. Chronicling a year at Washington Metropolitan High School in Washington, D.C., an inner-city school where, on any school day, about half of the students don't show up. Second-year principal Tanishia Williams Minor features in the documentary. Rating: TV-PG Without a little more context, the logical inference is that this school is representative of DC high schools, when in fact it is an aberration. |
1. The bolded sounds like a pretty accurate generalization of DC high schools to me. 2. I think most people will get the idea that it is just ONE school in DC's failing system. Who knows, the point may be made during broadcasting that they are performing well-below their low-performing peers.

Why not allow the inference and embarrass our city education leaders? |

Touche. |
I wouldnt assume that this was representative of all DC high school's from that description. Perhaps I'm not logical though.

| there was also an interview with the school principal on npr today, I look forward to watching tonight! her contract was not renewed after the year she said...good interview if you can find it |
WHAT????!!!! Why not?!!! From the reviews I read, I inferred she was doing a kick-ass job and really busting her azz despite the odds, resulting in some--albeit slight--progress. What kind of miracle works are they expecting from mere humans? I believe one article said the attendance in her school went up to 80 or 90% in her 1st or 2nd year---from like 8% the year before!!! And the scores, while not impressive, were still an improvement from when she first entered. So, did they say where she's going after leaving DCPS? |
|
DCPS principals are on year-to-year contracts. I'm guessing it was not renewed due to her involvement with the film perhaps....
. I will absolutely be watching. |
