Not only have things been horrible from the admin side, the student body and culture has taken a nose dive.
I actually went into that school a few times, wanting to volunteer based on the documentary. For one, the place did not even resemble a school. It looked more like a hangout. For a second I thought I was at the local Boys and Girls Club. Students roamed the halls, music blared from a stereo system. There were more students in the halls than in the classrooms. Students just randomly walked into classes that weren't theirs. This was not a place conducive to teaching and learning at all. If PBS does a follow up documentary, it will look and feel very differently than the first. No amount of editing could make that school look good. |
