Overheard some talk that a few parents/students are leaving Latin because they say it's in the hood. Now, I have not lived here long, but long enough to know that while that area of Petworth is certainly not equivalent to AU, GT or most of those upper NW areas (this is where these ppl that were talking live), I do know it is NOT the hood. Those women that were speaking have probably never set foot in a real "hood". I happen to like Petworth and have friends that live in that area that are now saying that their houses are starting to appreciate, more police presence, and they are having neighborhood meetings. Yes, we all know what that means..white ppl are moving in big time. As soon as the dog parks move in, then you know progress has been achieved .
Anyway, it's a shame that Latin will lose some of it's students due to ignorance, especially at the HS level, because once a student is gone, they can't be replaced. But, as a parent, you have to feel as though you are sending your child to a reasonably safe school, it's just that in this instance I think the parents are wrong and their "fears" are unwarranted. disclaimer: I have not looked on the DC police web site and checked out crime in that area. I just know when I walk around the neighborhood, I feel safe. My daughter has played at the nearby playground and I would have no problem with her walking around. |
| Whatever, OP. Glad you're OK with it. What, exactly, is your point? |
The point is that area of Petworth is NOT THE HOOD!!!!! I don't care if ppl leave Latin or not. I don't gain anything, but I hate hearing all that nonsense. |
| Petworth already has a dog park- Upshur Dog Park - and a white table cloth French restaurant, and a vegan restaurant. It is well into the process of gentrification already. |
| Besides seniors, I thought kids leaving would mean more space for entering students. Not true? |
| Latin parent here. If a few people leave out of ignorance, so what? There are plenty behind to fill in the gaps. I will hopefully be joining Martha Cutts, head of schooll, next week as members of the school community go door to door around the schools neighborhood to introduce ourselves and the school. Should be fun. Ribbon cutting for beginning construction is on March 25th. |
Sounds like a great plan!! |
I think because of the Latin language requirement, a student cannot enter the school after 9th grade. They wouldn't be able to meet the requirement for graduation. |
OP here. The dog park near 14th street? I didn't realize Petworth extended that far down. Actually, I don't know what I thought that area was called...lol BTW, I know about all these other things in the area, I was just poking fun. |
| Latin is really more in Brightwood/Takoma - so it's more like hippies in hoodies than the hood. |
| I live in Petworth and will be just fine if some WotP famlies leave Latin in order to make room for my child, who is in 1st grade now. WotP doesn't corner the market on middle class, engaged, educated families. |
| wow- since CCPCS is a few blocks away - they must be there as well. Good to know. |
| "the hood" may also just mean "too far away now." don't be so sensitive. |
| My people who live WotP are idiots. Petworth is one of the hottest real estate markets right now in DC. It is really trendy (for DC). |
hilarious - we live a couple blocks from there and I go out jogging with our stroller all the time, we walk to the metro and our neighbors are great. It definitely doesn't have a 'hood' feel! It's certainly not AU territory but we love it
