Now, I have not lived here long, but long enough to know that while that area of Petworth is certainly not equivalent to AU, GT or most of those upper NW areas (this is where these ppl that were talking live), I do know it is NOT the hood. Those women that were speaking have probably never set foot in a real "hood". I happen to like Petworth and have friends that live in that area that are now saying that their houses are starting to appreciate, more police presence, and they are having neighborhood meetings. Yes, we all know what that means..white ppl are moving in big time. As soon as the dog parks move in, then you know progress has been achieved .

Anyway, it's a shame that Latin will lose some of it's students due to ignorance, especially at the HS level, because once a student is gone, they can't be replaced. But, as a parent, you have to feel as though you are sending your child to a reasonably safe school, it's just that in this instance I think the parents are wrong and their "fears" are unwarranted. disclaimer: I have not looked on the DC police web site and checked out crime in that area. I just know when I walk around the neighborhood, I feel safe. My daughter has played at the nearby playground and I would have no problem with her walking around.

Latin is currently in Petworth, but next year it will begin in its new building at 2nd and Rudolph Streets, NW. That is what is driving the ignorant white parents who think that's the hood mad. I don't know what the neighborhood is called, but it is definitely not the hood, but it is not gentrified yet either. It is a perfectly average DC middle class neighborhood that is perfectly safe for children. If some current parents want to leave because of the location it is definitely their loss. The plans for the building are beautiful and I'm excited that my DC will be continuing there next year.

It's still considered Petworth on real estate listings

Wrong!!! They specifically said "that neighborhood" in a tone. If it was too far away they would have simply said that, I'm not being sensitive.

No one who knows DC would ever consider that Petworth.

This was announced a long time ago. OP, why are you talking about old news? Regardless, if many leave their seats will be filled quickly. Latin isn't lacking for students.

Before you start my kids dot go to Latin.

I think the new location will offer an opportunity for families in other areas of the city to get their easily. I live in Ward 5 and Latin is on my radar for my children (if DCPS can't get it together with the new MS they are opening in Ward 5). It would definitely be a much easier commute for my children.

Those two or three moms can leave. They probably aren't adding any real value if they carry around that type of attitude.

And its not the hood- mixed income, sure, but NOT the hood.

I think of it more as Brightwood than Petworth. My dd played soccer there this fall. Nice enough area.

OP here, I only brought it up because I never knew that was one of the reasons why parents were pulling their kids. I thought it was a distance thing for most people, so I was surprised when I heard that part of Petworth being called "Hood".

I didn't realize Petworth was considered the "Hood" until this article:

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2012-05-29/lifestyle/35456620_1_fish-bill-white-neighborhood

which says it is no longer.

I'd say it's closer to Brightwood than Petworth.

My mother in law lives a few blocks away from the new campus. It's a very quiet, safe neighborhood, lots of duplexes and rowhouses. People tend to buy their homes and live there for years There's not a lot of nice storefronts but it's a far cry from being the ghetto.

My, aren't you nice.

Man, I am white and I don't know as that's how I'd define "progress".

It's a neighborhood in transition to be sure, but is safe. The president used to attend soccer games at the Randolph field, for example.
