| Ok I am .. middle aged... and i've never cooked a pot roast. I have a small chuck roast. I have a slow cooker - I have a dutch oven - i have a regular oven. I have herbs, onions, carrots, potatoes, celery. I have searched the internet and found so many recipes. I know I will sear it in oil for 2 mins/side. I would like to use the slow cooker. I have read about cooking it on High and on Low - which is best? My meat is only 1.6 lbs. THANK YOU!! |
| I put it in my slow cooker with potatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms, a beef bullion and two cans of beer. Delicious! |
| That sounds great -- I just don't know how long to cook it for. It's small - so maybe 5 hrs on low? |
| I would plan to cook it for 8 hours on low. You really can't over-cook it in the slow cooker. |
| 8 hours on low is fine. I do pot roasts that size in my crock pot all the time. Sear the outside well, add diced root vegetables, some red wine and you're good to go. This is the recipe I use: http://www.thecitycook.com/cooking/recipes/data/000191 I just cut the recipe in half because a 3 pound roast would be too much for us. |

I made Tyler Florence's pot roast a few weeks ago and it was a huge hit. I did it in the dutch oven because I wanted to sear it, and didn't want to be bothered cleaning an extra pan. I also added potatoes into the pot and instead of water used beef stock and some red wine I needed to use up before they went bad. I think I let it cook for something like 5 or 6 hours, but I like my roast at the fall-apart-because-it's-so-tender stage.
DH forbade anyone from touching "his" leftovers and has been asking when I'm making it again. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/pot-roast-with-vegetables-recipe/index.html |
This is not true. I once had a pot roast turn out like shoe leather. |
| I cook pot roast often. I use the dutch oven and follow the directions (about 2 hours at 375) for one that small. I used the Dutch oven b/c our slow cooker does not do the best job and I found that if I used the timer on the oven (set cooking time) I could turn it on and leave it safely. I use some apple cider and some orange juice in the liquid and some spices -- delicious! You need to make sure there is enough liquid to completely cover the roast. GL. |
| I madea crockpot roast with a "top roast". I cooked well enough but just wasn't that tender. I cooked it with onion soup mix and cream of mushroom soup which seemd to be a very well used recipe. Is that not a good cut of meet for the crockpot? |
