While I agree that what happened on January 6th was violent in nature, why does that left insist that we "trust our eyes" when it comes to January 6th, but we're not to trust our eyes on all the numerous news reports, with video, of violence and destruction during the "protests" that occurred in the summer of 2020?

1) No one said there wasn't violence associated with the protests in the summer of 2020
2) In many/most cases, the peaceful protests included right wing agitators who instigated the violence and rioting. Not all, but many. It is documented with charges.
3) Equating peaceful protests over racial injustice with a coup is a serious fail.

1) Ok.
2) The vast, vast majority of looting on the news was not perpetrated by right wing agitators. That was evident from the video itself.
3) No equating occurred in my post. Rather, it was the double standard the left uses to "use your eyes" when it comes to January 6th, but "don't use your eyes" when it comes to the summer of 2020.

New poster here:
We've had rioting many times before in the history of our country. It's a crime and it should be prosecuted. End of story. But rioting isn't unusual.

This country has NEVER had an insurrection on Capitol Hill that tried to overturn the Constitution by force. That has never, ever, ever happened....until January 6th.

It boggles my mind why you are trying to equate a common event (rioting) to one that has pretty much never happened in 245 years of U.S. history. Your analogy is DUMB.

rioting and protesting =/= staging a coup

2.) A lot of the looting was perpetrated by gangs and organized crime having nothing to do with BLM. In some cases they were showing up with entire fleets of U-Hauls and organized crews of 20+ people to systematically clean stores out. They, like the other outside provocateurs like Boogaloo, took advantage of the protests and cynically didn't care if it made BLM look bad - because they had no care or interest in BLM.

3.) There is no double standard being applied. The standard being applied by the left is is coup attempt. The protests last summer did not fundamentally threaten American democracy as the 1/6 Capitol attack did.

The looting was largely just regular theft. It was not political. Only the individuals and property right there were at risk.

The violence at the Capitol was political. Our democracy and every citizen was at risk.

Huge difference.

Storming the Capitol to interrupt the votes being processed because you need to “take back your country” is a coup in my book. It’s exactly what Trump wanted.

There's a great read on WaPo right now about the motivations of the insurrectionists:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/capitol-riot-defense-trump-election/2021/07/19/e14f665e-d812-11eb-bb9e-70fda8c37057_story.html

I want to display the top comment to that article. It really says it all, IMHO, about Trump supporters. There is an undertone of violence to all of their political demands:

My family back in KS and NE are mostly Trump supporters.

Let's make something very clear.

Most of them voted for Trump precisely BECAUSE they have long fantasized about butchering American citizens they dislike.

That is what they mean when they say "Make America Great Again."

My uncles and many of my cousins have always talked about how much they they would love to see gays, feminists, "college boys," and some nebulously defined group of "elites" put to the sword.

And they are EXACTLY like most of the people you see in a Trump rally.

Indeed, virtually all of them have attended multiple Trump rallies.

When Trump supporters wear Confederate emblems on their hats and shirts they aren't saying "this is our heritage."

Rather they are saying "the South should have won and NYC and Philadelphia should have been burned."

When they scream "Lock her up!" they mean "Kill her."

And when they chant "Send them back!" they aren't talking about Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, AOC, or Rashida Tlaib.

They are talking about any person who makes things with math or science, any person who doesn't think "let's kill all all the gays," any person who doesn't drive an F150, and any person who doesn't derive half their caloric intake from gravy and Mountain Dew.

They are talking about the terminal annihilation of the majority of Americans who, in their view, just aren't sufficiently into Duck Dynasty and stonewashed Lee's.

They are talking about you.

Make no mistake, they would kill most Americans to give birth to a totalitarian dictatoriship so long as that dictator craps in a gold bucket with an eagle on it and pretends to like eating at Hardee's.

And their efforts to get you to think that 1/6 either didn't happen or that it wasn't a big deal is merely their effort to get you to stop paying attention as they mobilize their base to deploy terminal violence.

And he follows up with:

Actually, many of them ARE fine people.

A few of them (my uncle and some of my cousins mentioned above) are truly horrible but most of them are terrified of change.

They live in relatively small towns and truly believe in their hearts that the goal of "the culture" is to burn their churches and to make them go to PC reeducation camps.

While this is not true I can understand WHY they think this since our modern political discourse cleaves to maximalist positions.

As I said, some truly are deplorable people, but the advent of a nationalized politics and social media has allowed "politics" to be presented as universal and all-consuming.

And for many people the only thing that compels them is terror and rage.

This is probably true for lots of people from different political backgrounds, but in the hands of authoritarian populists like Trump and his hardcore GOP supporters it is truly destructive.

Fine people afraid of change - being manipulated into being horrible people by vicious, cynical fearmongering propaganda being pushed by the right wing. Nobody is trying to burn their churches or send them to re-education camps. They need a reality check. They need reassurance. We are not at threat of becoming communist or much of anything else that they are so afraid of.

Well the GOP didn’t pass it so we just need to sentence them in the system we have. Just sad they’re not going to Guantanamo with the other terrorists.

What is so sad is that they are more willing to believe a random guy on the TV, radio, or internet than their own friends & family. The family members try to come and present evidence, but they are dismissed as "libs" or some other slur.

Do they really think that Sean Hannity or Rush Limbugh cares about what happens to them when they get sick with COVID? They are purveyors of dopamine hits and the media consumer is the addict.

Rush Limbaugh is beyond all caring. LOL.

I call bs on some of this. I know these people too and a lot of the root problem IS racism. As they sink lower economically their hate for the people who should be less than them grows. They blame non whites and the democrat party who supports the non whites for all of their problems.
