First kindergarten report (second quarter)

Did anyone get 4s ?
DS is definitely above grade level in reading and math (he can do simple double digit addition), but got only 3s.
A parent told me that kindergarten first reports are never 4s so the teachers can show progress by the end of the year. Is that true?
Did any Kindergarteners get any 4s and if yes, which subjects? Also, which school?
Also, do any of your kindergartener reports have the following filled up -
1.reading above grade level in language arts
2.and a "y" in where your child was instructed in one or more areas of mathematics

It's close to what our teacher told us. She said since not everything has been taught yet she won't give a 4 now. My child is reading Magic Tree House books and doing additions/subtractions and got all 3s.

I'm glad you posted b/c I'm completely taken aback by dc's report card.

I didn't expect to be, it's just kindergarten so I didn't really even think much of it until I saw the report card. She got all 2's even though she is reading quite well for K- I think DRA level 7. Can easily do addition and subtraction up to 20 (math is her favorite subject), can easily tell you all about what they have learned about Rosa Parks, MLK, and Abe Lincoln.

I don't think she's a genius but certainly doing above average across the board with the exception of handwriting. Her spacing between words is not enough.

But still only 2s???

That said her teacher has expressed concern with me about behavioral issues but that really should not effect the grades as far of her knowledge of subjects goes right?

I would have been very happy with all 3s and honestly I've heard the same that teachers never give out 4s or Os the 1st report card, but 2s when she clearly has a good understanding of the subjects???
Is there anything that one can do about this or a way to challenge it?

Mine had 2s, 3s and 4s. Threes and 4s were the most common, but I felt the teacher was overly generous with a few of them. The 2s were no surprise at all and I'm not sure those 2s will be 3s by the end of the school year.

Also wanted to add, no there was no indicator checked off for doing something above grade level.

If your child got mostly 2s and you are shocked, ask the teacher about it. Don't be accusatory, just ask for more clarification and examples. If the 2s my kid got were a shock I would have done that. I saw the 2s and agreed and was relieved they weren't 1s.

We did have all 4s last year and it did note that DC was being instructed above grade level for reading....but that was before the new report cards that just started this year....that may be the reason...

All 4s for DD. She is reading chapter books.

The children should be graded on what they've learned. It makes no sense to just give them a 2 because they haven't learned part of a subject. These interpretations of the new report cards are ridiculous.

The new report cards are supposed to show how much MASTERY of a given subject a child DEMONSTRATES. If your child has mastered only part of an objective or does not consistently demonstrate it due to behavior issues or whatever, don't get your knickers in a knot. We're only halfway through the year. And your kid is in kindergarten! The vast majority of kids will demonstrate mastery of all they need to know by the time they move on to 1st grade, and I guarentee you that if your kid is significantly behind he or she has already been identified and is getting help.

The other reason that ES report cards were changed was to keep the focus on what the child is learning rather than having us parents hyperventilate when our kids were judged to be merely Good rather than Outstanding. Don't start hyperventilating about 3 vs. 4, please. And cut teachers a break! These standards are new to them too, and everyone is still working to figure out the system.

Got all 3's and 4s. They are supposed to grade them on just what they taught them. Not lower their score becuase they didn't get to something yet. That's how the old report carsd worked and it was ridiculous. talk to the teacher. These report cards are new for them, so it could just be a learning curve.
