I am a lifelong progressive Democrat. Typically, progressives center the narratives of people directly affected and allow them to define their own oppression. But now that they see an opening to criticize Israel (75% of this thread is foaming-at-the mouth, over-the-top, ISIS-level anti-Israel conspiracy propaganda), suddenly what actual Iranians say and feel doesn't matter to them at all. I don't care that Israel was involved here. I simply do not care. If they're the ones that create a catalyst for change in my country that ends up freeing 93 million people from the hellscape they've been living in, great. You people are so BLINDED by your maniacal hatred of Israel and to a lesser extent Trump (who I'm no fan of generally) that you can't perceive the absolute absurd hypocrisy of your position.

It's fine to object to this on the basis that it's not America's affair and they should stay out of it, because tax dollars or whatever BS (so far, only six American service members have (tragically) died, so I really don't think it's concern for our troops). Immoral position to take in the face of this regime, but ok. That's not what most of this thread is doing, though. People are instead moralizing at actual Iranians and pretending to care about the girls school that was bombed (unconfirmed that this was even Israel/the US and not Iran itself) or the future of Iran. Where were you when this regime murder FORTY THOUSAND OF ITS OWN PEOPLE?? When it tortured dissidents in secret prisons, threw acid on women for not covering their hair, literally went into hospitals where protesters were being treated and shot them point blank in the head? You don't give one flying f about Iranian people. Please don't pretend otherwise.

As far as I can tell, so far, all America has done is kill (extremely justifiably) a bunch of monstrous butchers and weakened their grip on power. This may or may not lead to regime change, but I can tell you for damn certain the regime is not going to be able to carry on the same way after this. Absolute WORST case scenario, the regime persists but its nuclear ambitions are done for and it becomes more friendly to US interests.

You're allowed to define your experiences. That doesn't mean you get to sign my kids up to die in your war. Six people is too many. If you'd like to die fighting the Iranian regime, no one is going to stop you.

This is simply TDS and delusions about Israel.

Why don’t people understand there are a lot of Dems who are ACTUALLY peaceniks? Who protested the Iraq war. Who protested Gaza because it was clear it went way beyond strategy. Women and children suffer in war. Soldiers die for interests that aren’t always clear. There is nothing good about it.

The irony being that Trump was supposed to be a master negotiator who would keep us out of war. He is a destabilizing force.

No one likes war. I also don’t like the wanton terror Islam brings to every nation.

so this is a war on Islam?

Islam has declared war on everyone that isn’t Islamic. We are just showing them that ain’t gonna play.

For those young’uns out there, Iran was pretty Western in the 1970s

So you can impose Western style government on Iran, but Iran cannot choose their own style of government, and if Iran tried to impose their regime in the US, that’d be bad too.

They already have a western style government in Iran. The ayatollah is a symbolic figure like the pope not the president. They have A parliament, elections, and a president. He’s still alive.

What it seems people want to change is culture and make it more Westwen for women and gays. Again, that’s not something you can just change by bombing the place and killing their schoolchildren. wtf is wrong with America? We have our own problems and can barely protect our own schools from lunatic school shooters.

It’s their country. They can have whatever culture they want, changing the regime won’t change the culture. And that is a form of colonialism.

AND they keep causing problems around the world. Until they stop, we will stomp on them.

Israel is causing problems around the world. Iran minds its own business. It indicated no threat to the United States whatsoever. In fact, they were open to negotiation multiple times as recent as last week. Whenever the us and Iran get close to a breakthrough, Bibi bombs Iran. It’s sick. What can you expect from the man who killed the Israeli prime minister Rabin? If he can kill leftist Jews, do you think he cares about anything else? He’s the anti peace villain for the Oslo accords and two state solution and he’s anti peace and threw a fit about the Obama Iran deal. Any sort of deal makes his ill. And for what? Israelis are dying too right now and are fleeing the country in numbers higher than ever. What’s the point of all this if Israelis d[img]on’t even want to live in their country?

No, Iran doesn't mind its own business, imbecile. The more of the Khamenei regime that are smoked, the better.

No, we have democrats to do that instead through mass importation of neadreathals.

MAGAs have thousands of years before they will evolve enough to be Neanderthals.

What problems? Why is it your responsibility to save the world from all the so called problems that Iran causes? And the hypocrisy is pretty insane. MAGAS don’t care about Gays or women’s rights, they just want to colonize and control brown countries like they did in the past.

Two things can be true at once. The Ayatollah was bad (was going to say the world is better off now, but I'm honestly not certain that is true bexause of the way this has been handled) AND this administration is a clown show being led around by the nose by Israel AND international law and human rights are being violated, and for what reason, the administration has not been able to clearly communicate.

Okay so why do my kids need to die for this? We can’t go around doing things so other people can be happy at our expense. We need health care in America. We need to support our next generation. Not get into random wars because some people are happy.

Exactly six American servicemembers have died in this conflict so far. Far less than the number of Americans killed by the Iranian regime and its proxies. Pipe down.

You pipe down. We don't want our kids in this fight.

You people don't get it, do you. The Islamist terrorist rot that this regime spreads will come for you too. Just look at the state of this thread. It's page after page after page of antisemitic, anti-Western propaganda talking points. This regime has murdered Americans on American soil. It has murdered Americans abroad. It will continue to murder Americans and threaten American interests until it is stopped. And if it gets nukes - it cannot be stopped.

So worth it to forgo cancer research for American children for this? Reasonable to take away healthcare subsidies for Americans for this?

If it succeeds? Certainly.

You can’t even get regime change in Gaza . It took 10 years to get regime change in Syria. How are they going to get regime change in Iran? Trump is notoriously impatient. Within a few weeks or less, he’s going to want this wrap this up and move on.

Rather different situation, right?

Iran is a functioning (ish) nation with organized opposition. Leadership can’t just disappear into tunnels (unlike Gaza). If they do, country will cease functioning and opposition will take control.

Do you hear yourself? Tunnels? All of the trillions in the best Us bombs and Israel can’t take out tunnels built by Gazans? That says alot. It says they don’t know how to fight.

Keep in mind in Vietnam the Us won every single battle. Every single one. Same in Afghanistan. However,
The regime change did not happen because the people did not want it. The people wanted communism and the people wanted the Taliban. Who are we to impose our ideals and values where they are not needed?

+1 Hegseth said the other day that we’ve established air superiority so it’s only a matter of time before Iran begs us to pick the new leader. We had air superiority in Vietnam THE ENTIRE TIME.

God, that mutt face is embarrassing. Picking Iran's leader is how the US started this war in the first place. The US kicked out a democratically elected leader and the CIA did a regime change. Years later, the people kicked out both the US and the US puppet and erroneously installed another terrible person. But that was the Iranian people's doing. Similar to just like the USA installed our very own terrible leader. Oh and btw, I thought we had air superiority in Vietnam and Afghanistan as well. How did that work out for us. Not well!

In the past few days, I've listened to a number of interviews with retired generals, admirals, and other high-ranking officials. They all said that an aerial campaign--even if you add a naval component--is not sufficient to bring about regime change. For that, they all said, you need boots on the ground. I'm pretty sure that the generals advising Trump told him the same thing. Hegseth and other war-mongers are just caught up in the short-term excitement of watching missiles obliterate targets on a screen (kind of like a video game) without thinking ahead to the next phase. What happens when they run out of military targets? Will they start bombing schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings like Israel and Russia do?

Trump and Hegseth have been trying to get the Kurds to take up arms and fight the Iranian Guard. They've been promised weapons. Reminds me of what Rumsfield offered Iraq back in 1982 to take up arms against Iran. Over 2million people lost their lives between the two countries. And then less than twenty-years later, Rumsfield and the US stabbed Iraq in the back.

I don't care that Israel was involved here. I simply do not care.

Funny how we didn’t have any enemies in the Middle East till 1948.

Maybe they’re declaring war on everyone that’s attacking them.

You forget about WWI? Ottomans fought with the Central Powers.

Not to mention the mess during WWII, Suez crisis, etc.

Hasn’t exactly been a paradigm of peace and tranquility.

The Suez “crisis” was Egypt deciding that it owns its own freaking canal. It’s a “crisis” when western powers can no longer steal from native people I guess. 🤷‍♀️

So you can impose Western style government on Iran, but Iran cannot choose their own style of government, and if Iran tried to impose their regime in the US, that’d be bad too.

Someone upthread said we're good because we have a piece of paper and Iran doesn't. (...the constitution)

So, are we calling it a war yet...?

LOL, our newest Secretary of DHS, friends.

It's to cover up the Epstein files and to kowtow to Isreal so they don't release the dirt they have on Trump.

Jews problems started before Islam. They were battling everyone in the region back when it was pagan

What problems? Why is it your responsibility to save the world from all the so called problems that Iran causes? And the hypocrisy is pretty insane. MAGAS don’t care about Gays or women’s rights, they just want to colonize and control brown countries like they did in the past.

You democrats keep dropping pallets of cash on them as they execute gays, kill 40,000 of their own citizens and torture people in prisons.

WTF are you whining about?

MAGAS are angry, confused, and bitter and have a difficult time understanding why all these democrats(!) support the “evil” Iranian regime. No one does buddy, we’re just not racist evil pricks who rejoice at the killing of Muslims in pointless wars.

Dude I think you are mistaken. MAGA is crazy pissed off about this war and Trump being lead around by Bibi. The people who are so upset are the Israeli first crowd who think the Dems should be kissing their feet for this war. The ghost of neocons past, present and future.

It’s not 1991 anymore.

I mean, nice try, but I am the Iranian who posted earlier, and I am very much NOT a Trump supporter and in general despise him to his core. It was right there in my post, which you apparently did not read.

Also, Iranians ARE fighting to change their own government - at least 40,000 of them have died in service of that cause, but they can't do it alone. I know you think their lives are worth less than dirt, but try to be more discreet about it at least. And this is neither here nor there, but do you think Iranians don't serve in the US military? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kavon_Hakimzadeh. There are between 500,000 - 1 million Iranians living in America and they have contributed immeasurably to its culture, economy, military, academic institutions, etc etc.

DP. Can you explain what you would like the US government to do for Iranians? You’re obviously very frustrated, but it’s not clear what you want Americans to do to help your people.

Still waiting for an answer, Iranian American pp.

Nothing more than what they've already done. Weaken this regime, force them to make concessions, give reform/change (whatever form that ends up taking) at least a fighting chance. If we end up with a continuation of the regime but in a weakened, more western-friendly form - so be it. That is a positive development in my eyes, and I don't see why it's a negative one in the eyes of so many on this thread that claim to care about America's interests.

Why would it take a more Western form? That's not a logical outcome in any sense.

Why wouldn't it? America has just proven that the Iranian regime is a paper tiger, militarily. They have been utterly humiliated on the world stage. Their anti-Western posturing isn't going to play with the Iranian population anymore (to the extent it ever did).

When 9/11 humiliated America did we suddenly look more favorably on the Arab world? Like this idea seems like total nonsense.

Did most Americans despise their own government and prefer the Arab world prior to 9/11? No? Then this is not a useful comparison.

Yes, yes indeed. Half of America despised the Bush-Cheney government. Hanging chads was still a sore spot. However after 9/11 it wasn't about Bush-Cheney. We rallied against the enemy and for our country.
