This is where the conversation with republicans always drops off. When they are asked for specifics. |

Ok +1, which standards do you think are unreasonable? |
A new survey from the School Nutrition Association reported that 70 percent of the nation's lunch programs have been financially "harmed" by the new low-salt, low-sugar menus and that a stunning 93 percent report fewer students buying the chow.
"Meeting these mandates has harmed the financial health of nearly 70 percent of school meal programs surveyed, with fewer than 3 percent reporting a financial benefit," said the survey. Some 49 percent of the responding schools said they were forced to cut cafeteria staff as a result One of the 450 comments received in the survey sized up how students feel about the new healthy menu being forced on schools. It said: "We have noticed that not only is participation decreasing, but those students that do take the meals do not EAT the meals. Our waste has increased dramatically. It is shameful the food we throw away. We have the healthiest garbage! The new survey backed that trend up with stunning new statistics. Among them: • 58 percent of respondents reported that student lunch participation declined under the new standards. Nearly 93 percent of those respondents cite "decreased student acceptance of meals" as a contributing factor to this decline. • Nationwide, USDA data shows that more than a million fewer students choose school lunch each day under the new rules. • Nearly 74 percent of districts with a la carte service report that this revenue has decreased since the 2014 Smart Snacks in School rules took effect, with 43 percent citing a strong decrease. This loss in revenue can cripple school meal programs, already struggling to manage higher food and labor costs due to the new rules. • Almost half of responding districts (49 percent) have reduced staffing. • 41 percent have diminished the meal program's reserve fund, critical for investing in program improvements. • 36 percent have limited menu choices and variety. • 32 percent have deferred or canceled equipment investments. https://schoolnutrition.org/uploadedFiles/Resources_and_Research/Research/SNA2015TrendsSummary.pdf |
Michelle Obama's childhood obesity initiative has been the subject of conservative criticism for some time, and now there's another group joining in on the attack.
In a four-minute YouTube video called "We Are Hungry," a troop of Kansas high schoolers take on the restrictions mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which limits the calorie count of school lunches to 850. The policy, which was intended to not only wipe out hunger and malnutrition among American students but to encourage healthy eating, also calls for more fruit and vegetables and fewer sweet and fatty foods. But some say the amount of food you get in 850 calories simply isn't enough -- especially if you're a rapidly growing teen. Think of a high-school boy who works out at least three hours a day, not including farm work," said Brenda Kirkham, an employee at the Wallace County High School where the video was filmed. "I'm furious," she told the Wichita Eagle. Kirkham's colleague Linda O'Connor penned the video, which features students criticizing the calorie restrictions, passing out in the classroom, on the football field and in the gym, and going to great lengths to feel full, such as sneaking out of class to a locker stashed with snacks. The video opens with a stat from KidsHealth.org's "A Guide to Eating Healthy for Sports" that says active teens require 2000 to 5000 calories per day to adequately meet their growth and energy needs. https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/1914394/amp |
Still haven’t said what it unreasonable!
Sounds like these people are blaming everything on the standards when there’s clearly more going on here. And 850 cal is not enough for a school lunch? Give me a break. Do these athletes realize they can bring more food from home to avoid passing out? I don’t think loading them up on high calorie chips and cookies instead will help. I’m gonna watch that video just for the entertainment value. |
N.J. High School Students Planning Cafeteria Boycott To Protest Obama Guidelines Parsippany Hills Students Ask, Why Should We Pay For The Obese's Problems? PARSIPPANY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Students at Parsippany Hills High School held a strategy session on Thursday to discuss a potential lunch strike, on Friday, over what they have called inadequately sized meals. “This year you’re eating lunch and you’re like ‘Did I even eat?’ You’re not even full,” senior Brandon Faris told CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis. New federal guidelines stemming from first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign have resulted in limits on protein and bread, and an increase in vegetables and fruits. The changes have also come at an increased cost. Members of the food service industry told CBS 2 that new federal guidelines have caused a significant shift in portion size. “There’s a lot less turkey on the sandwich, there’s 33 percent less turkey and the size of the bread has been reduced by a third,” explained Mark Vidovich, who runs Pomptonian Food Service. https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/09/27/n-j-high-school-students-planning-cafeteria-boycott-to-protest-obama-guidelines/ |
Honestly who would become obese eating a regular turkey sandwich for lunch? Why would there have to be less turkey in the sandwich? |
Lunchroom Gestapo. |
Still...nobody can name an actual standard that’s unreasonable. Just rattling off a bunch of bad school lunch horror stories. Guess what! Bad school lunches have always been a thing. If your school has a problem with serving quality food, then take it up with them. Less turkey is probably due to the astronomical sodium content of processed lunch meat. |
Would you prefer that your kids lunchroom staff just let him toss an entire tray of food that you purchased just because he was too busy talking and didn’t bother eating? |
My elementary school kid eats a packed lunch everyday. It’s a filling, healthy lunch. On his birthday, I allowed him to take a chocolate bar in his lunch to celebrate. He was very excited, as he does not as a rule have candy packed in his lunch. The lunch monitor disapproved of his candy bar. In his school, the teacher does not eat with the class. Monitors patrol the cafeteria and keep order. So as he delightedly pulled his birthday candy bar from his lunch bag to eat- in swooped yes, lunch gestapo. She complained he was not eating healthily enough and told him not to bring anymore candy bars in his lunch. I actually witnessed the entire ridiculous incident, as I came in to eat lunch with him for his birthday. I asked her if desert or treats are forbidden, and she said no, but discouraged. For someone who works with kids- she was a complete bi$ch to my kid. Rude, repulsive woman. Liberals and their minions suck. |
Limited calorie counts for normal, growing kids. Limited portion sizes for growing, normal kids. Limited calorie and portion sizes for athletes and children who are not obese. Non-obese children should not have to limit their portion size of healthy foods because other children have weight or nutrition problems. |
This has nothing to do with liberals or the topic being discussed. You probably should have taken it up with the principal instead of blaming Michelle and liberals. |
Liberals are 100% behind normal kids having limited amounts of healthy food at lunch and paying more. Liberals won’t let normal kids eat normally- every kid has to have limited calories and portion sizes because of the kids who are overweight. Fat free milk? DISGUSTING. You ever taste that crap? Yuck. |
