Maybe this isn’t typical, but at my kids school, which is where I work, they have 4 main entree options every day.
First choice is something like pasta, chicken, pizza, quesadillas - typical school lunch fare. Second choice is the same all year for that day of the week, so hamburger on Tuesday. Third is something like pb&j sandwich Fourth is usually yogurt and baked crackers All of these come with a whole grain and side. Then the kids also choose fruits and veggies from the garden bar, which has about 8 different items. Small cups of ranch available to dip the veggies in, which makes raw veggies palatable to most kids. Is this not typical? Because I see nothing wrong with it. If a child can’t find something he likes in this situation, then it’s not Michelle’s fault. |
School lunch fruits and veggies often tossed in trash, study finds
New federal guidelines requiring healthier school lunches have made headlines in recent years, but that doesn't mean kids are eating them up. In fact, a study conducted soon after the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act went into effect found what many parents suspected: a lot of school children were taking the required fruits and vegetables and throwing them directly into the trash. The study, published online Tuesday in Public Health Reports, comes about a month before Congress is scheduled to vote on whether to reauthorize the program. Researchers from the University of Vermont used digital photography to capture images of students' lunch trays after they selected their food, as they were leaving the lunch line, and again at the end of their lunch as they passed the food disposal area. They found that while children placed more fruits and vegetables on their trays - as required by the USDA mandates put in place in 2012 - they consumed fewer of them. The amount of food wasted increased by 56 percent, the researchers found. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/school-lunch-fruits-and-veggies-often-tossed-in-trash-study-finds/ |
Ok and your take-away is that schools shouldn’t be serving fruits and veggies because kids would like to eat junk instead? I think the issue is that too many parents aren’t raising their kids on fruits and veggies. Or maybe the schools aren’t giving them reasonable choices. Neither of these things are Michelle’s fault. At our school, kids choose two and the options are typically carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, apple slices, orange slices, grapes, cantaloupe. If your kid can’t find 2 things they will eat, then you should work on that. |
Those of you who are against the standards...what exactly do you think is unreasonable? Be specific. Actually look at the standards and copy paste the part that is unreasonable.
I am a teacher and have lunchroom duty. Kids at our school have to get permission to dump their tray. If they don’t eat their food, I talk to them about it. I ask them why they made those choices if they don’t like them. I encourage them to at least try their entree and if they really hate it, they shouldn’t choose it again. Usually, with a little nudging, kids will go ahead and eat. The most common answer I get when they aren’t eating is that they aren’t hungry because it’s 11:00 and they’ve had breakfast and their snack that they can bring from home and eat in class. |
Crickets...
As Trumpers look at the actual standards for the first time and realize they are quite reasonable. |
My kids were forced into using the cafeteria one time each bc they forgot lunch. Never again, they said School lunches are disgusting. Budgets need to be examined. There's so much waste in the system. So many ridiculous programs that produce no results Damn straight MO could have forced the issue - why didn't she look at a system's budget to examine $ toward food? Did she tour cafeterias to view the slop? I wonder what Sidwell's lunches were like?? But dancing around & growing an organic garden were superficial activities that pumped up her ego & image. She had a lot of folks fooled. |
So...which standards are unreasonable? |
