Common Core question for proponents

Finally, prudent school-system book buyers will actually look inside the books, instead of just buying them for their fancy, pretty stickers.

It's not just money that is wasted. It's wasted time for millions of students and their teachers. It's not always easy to quantify the waste in dollars. Waste comes in many forms.

The problem is when those companies are on the committees that determine the educational changes (Common Core) and when they make changes for the benefit of their bottom line instead of for the benefit of the students. Do you understand how that might be a problem?

Simply put, the standards should not be written by those who stand to make money from them. It's called "conflict of interest".

So don't. Stop arguing about the Common Core standards, and start working for the solutions you want to see.

Nobody is worshipping the Common Core standards.

Meanwhile, the Common Core opponents have repeatedly failed to explain what "proven" would entail, and whether any other standards are "proven" at a level that meets their approval.

Also, it's a myth that the states adopted the standards before they were written. If you want to prove your claim, please provide the dates that each Common Core-adopting state adopted the Common Core standards.

My experience with the Common Core actually started when I was asked to sign on to them before they were written. … I was told I needed to sign a letter agreeing to the Common Core, and I asked if I might read them first, which is, I think, appropriate. I was told they hadn’t been written, but they still wanted my signature on the letter.

And "proven" standards would be those introduced to real, live, breathing children -- and then finding the children thrived on them. The standards should work on a bell curve -- with most students achieving them, instead of only a few achieving them like what's happening in early adopter states like Kentucky.

Instead of these moneymaking tests for Pearson that re designed to punish and fail, the tests would be designed for students, teachers, parents and schools in mind. Testing a kid for 10 hours -- or 20 if they're disablede -- then giving them a BULLSHIT 1, 2, 3, or 4 with NO DATA actually telling them where they need to improve is a TRAVESTY.

After the above was posted, I received an email from Chad Colby, director of Strategic Communications & Outreach for Achieve, a non-profit organization that helped pioneer the Common Core Standards. Colby said that Scott was wrong when he said that the authors of the Common Core were not known early in the process, and that “nobody was asked to adopt the standards before they were written.” He said that “the names of the writers and their associated work groups were released prior to July 2009.”

Actually, in February 2010, Kentucky became the first to adopt the Common Core standards before the final version was publicly released. Colby said it was not pressured to do that but chose to do it voluntarily. Hawaii approved them a week before the final of five drafts of the standards was released on June 2, 2010.

Republicans and Democrats alike have expressed sharp concern about the prominent role standardized testing now plays in schools across the nation. They’re considering scrapping the federal mandate that all states test all students in reading and math each year in grades three through eight plus at least once in high school.

Except that this is not a Common Core issue. It's a No Child Left Behind issue.

Would you say that because the Soviet Union had a great educational system (and they did) that their communist government was great?
