Compare that to my daughter's Bethesda area private school, where 54% are accepted. The sad part is the majority do not matriculate there because they are more interested in private universities and can afford them. In my opinion, UMCP should be more discriminating with private school applicants, but I suspect that is not feasible. Clearly these students are just checking the box to apply. For my daughter, Maryland was considered a "very likely" despite everyone claiming it is such a hard school to get into. Doesn't seem fair to me.

Private school kids often have to work for As in classes. 93 or 94 not 90. And late assignments and other tomfoolery are not treated with respect as in public schools.

90 is an A- in FCPS you douche.

NP. We are talking about MCPS you douche. This is a UMD thread. Go back to your thread on UVA.

I believe UMD enrolls students outside MCPS and MD.

Go back and read this thread. The initial comment was about Bethesda area schools. Virginia doesn't matter in this discussion.

The initial comment on this thread was, "Here is a thread for you urban moms for once they release decisions".

Are about 18% from Montgomery county MD?

https://reports.umd.edu/tableaupublic/1824

Montgomery County accounts for 35.2% (8339/23635) of the undergraduate population at UMD, compared to only being 18% of the total population of Maryland. MoCo isn't being shorted with respect to attendance at UMD.

Now do it for kids with sats over 1500, or kids who got 5s on AP Calc BC. I bet McPS is being shortchanged with respect to high stats kids. Families in this state who care about education often move to McPS so we have a disproportionate number of highly qualified kids. We moved here from PG for instance.

I have heard that it is easier to get into UMCP if you graduate from PGCPS than MCPS. It's not just about DEI because most of the kids I know from PG at UMCP are white. Eleanor Roosevelt High School seems to have a huge number of kids that transition over to UMCP.
Someone told me that UMCP sets aside X% of seats for each county based on the population of that county. I have no idea if it is true or not.

Ugh people on these forums. The thread is obviously for anyone to post in-state, out of state, accepted, unaccepted.

Yup. Wish we had a Maryland State or Maryland Tech!

You realize UM (BC) is a Univ of Maryland, right? It's a UMD located in a different county. So it's a step UP from what would be a MD State if MD had a MD State. And, UMBC is marketed as a good school for STEM maybe not at the caliber of VA Tech tho that's debatable, perhaps. What if it was an easy name change? Towson's name changed to Maryland State. Would more students apply and attend if accepted?

UMBC is really just as good as UMD. Plus it’s got a better campus!

Really? there is nothing nearby? college park is an average town i guess but umbc is sort of an island. don't doubt the academics are good but not much going on. if my kid doesn't get into umd, he'll probably choose Towson.

Winston Churchill

Walter Johnson—though for some, this area is not rich enough

Walt Whitman—rich area

Probably not Wootton (sp) because these are the “poors” as the people here would think.

or as my mcps kids would say- W for White schools.

I just don’t get this take. WJ is 47% white (non Hispanic)—that’s less than state average and only a tinge above the county average.

You must have a huge house. Quit your griping and move to bama if you want a big cheap mcmansion. Our moco house is 3,000 sq ft and we pay $6k in property taxes, $200 in electric in hottest months and around $300 in gas in winter.

If there are 85 kids all with the same stats and activities, they will only take so many from each school so going to a w school where your kids are just one of many is a disadvantage. We’ve said it for years. Why is it a surprise?

It sounds like the previous poster lives in Baltimore. Property taxes in the city are insane and the old houses aren't fuel efficient. But also, I would wager moco has more McMansions than all of Alabama combined. Lord.

What kind if HVAC system do you have? What are your settings? Is it a 1500 sq ft with a 1500 sq ft basement? These numbeds don’t seem to jive with the people I talk to.

That's not a Maryland problem, that is a Baltimore problem and you should know that when you buy there or move to the county.

Those of us who have been through it know this. Lots of people don’t know it yet. We bought our house before kids started elementary school, so I wasn’t yet haunting the college forum religiously.

I’m the original complainer and live in Moco. I’m not whining about the property taxes per se, yes we knew what they would be when we bought. But kids of tax paying parents with 4.4w/3.9uw and 4 ap classes senior year should get into umd.

MCPS kids who get into top schools typically have more than 4 APs or was that just senior year? You are compared to the level of rigor available at your school which offers something like 12+
