So other institutions are opening tomorrow. MCPS should be able to get their act together to open on Wednesday, probably with a delay.

No, schools are typically a full day (at least) behind everyone else. And everyone else includes the liberal leave people not coming in tomorrow.

Still not plowed at all here in our SS neighborhood!

They could definitely open child care tomorrow and certainly on Wednesday if they wanted to. They just don't want to because they dgaf about child care.

I don’t know about tomorrow, and I don’t know if the parking lots near us are cleared (questionable given the rest of our neighborhood). But I agree that reopening child care should be a priority.

The closures/delays are self-perpetuating. MCPS didn't bother trying to prepare schools today because they already closed tomorrow. So now if things don't go smoothly tomorrow, they'll need to close Wednesday, despite it being entirely avoidable.

Wednesday will be closed. I hope they let childcare open. I am skeptical.

If Taylor has building services work tomorrow, a delayed opening on Wednesday is completely possible.

I guess anything is possible, but I’ve never seen a district in this area open in these conditions and the county isn’t even projecting having all residential streets passed through at least once until tomorrow afternoon.

Even if they don't get to all neighborhoods until tomorrow afternoon, that still means Wednesday should be fine.

They’re saying they’ll get to all neighborhoods at least once, which typically is insufficient as a back to school metric.

It's absolutely sufficient. At least, it should be.

I don't understand why you're so willing to accept incompetence in decision-making.

I liked snow days as a kid and my kids like them now, so I’ll admit that’s how I lean. I do hope they open childcare for people who need it. But I also know that plowing side streets only once when it’s this icy can lead to some pretty dangerous conditions. We tend to have a higher bar for student safety than we do for other businesses opening. I’m okay with that.

And I think Thursday/ Friday is where the debate should be.

Weds is definitely closed. Thursday is 80% chance closure. Friday is 50/50. People will be very mad about Friday no matter what they do.

I agree this is where we are.

I don't get it- what do you think plowing another time accomplishes? We haven't been getting more snow.

The comments from teachers telling them to slow down are disgusting.

There is something incredible toxic about teacher culture

I assume it is mostly just a few jaded teachers. I don't think it reflects the overall perspective.

Typical "if I have to go to work, everyone should have to!" mindset in this forum. Some of us actually care about the safety of kids-in ALL areas of the county no less, not just our own.

MCPS has a whole extra day to get their act together. I'm not saying they're going to open tomorrow. We already know they won't. But they can absolutely open Wednesday.

It’s not just mcps, the county has to plow and many of us don’t get buses and our kids have to walk a mile or two to school and parts of the walk are dangerous roads, some with no sidewalks. And, our streets are either not plowed or sheets of ice.

Most streets will be plowed today, and the remaining will be plowed tomorrow. Plenty of time to open on Wednesday.

If your kids have to walk through snow, put them in boots. Though, likely sidewalks will already be either shoveled or packed down.

I really don't understand you people. Why does snow scare you so much?

I'm outside the DMV. Our district will do virtual school day if this continues. They were also given packets to do for each class. Public high school. I joked to my HS senior that you could relive the joys of remote middle school.

Eh I've seen the same sorts of things from teachers I personally know on Facebook. I know many wonderful people who are teachers who question some of these attitudes but the culture is one that constantly denigrates parents, disparages the role of lower paid and disproportionately BIPOC child care providers, and generally encourages victimhood instead of advocacy.

No. There's something incredibly toxic about MoCo parents. (Saying this AS a parent here) We've never lived in an area with people this awful and cannot wait for the next transfer.

Where is there childcare for school age kids besides the school buildings? Most of us can't drive our kid somewhere after school, we have to work, so the programs would have to pick up the kids from school or something, which I've never heard of. Care in the buildings is really the only option for working parents (unless you're rich enough for a nanny I guess.)

But also childcare in school buildings has always worked just fine at the tail end of snowstorms, when the rest of the county is back to work but schools aren't open yet. No reason why that should change.

There's many that will drop off and pick up kids from school. Look at gyms, Karate, Tae kwon do studios near your child's school. There's other options through some bigger churches as well. They have the flexibility of not having to follow MCPS decisions, although some still choose to do so.

Do you even have kids or have you ever used aftercare? You sound like you don’t understand how it works. Working parents need several hour of after school care. Feel free to name a local gym or tae kwon do studio that doubles as regular childcare for parents. I don’t know of any that do this on a daily basis during the school year. I can’t imagine a reputable sports establishment doing this.

Probably if you have a decent car and don’t live on a hill and depending on ice. Again, higher standard usually for schools and students.

This is a pretty common model, lots of elementary schools have programs that pick up. Here is just one:

No plows at all have come through my neighborhood in close-in Bethesda. Wisconsin is plowed. That's it. No way to get into or out of the neighborhood. I've seen multiple cars get stuck trying - even the slightest incline and they can't make it. And it's a hilly neighborhood. No way can a bus get through here. If they manage to clear it all tomorrow then great, but I highly doubt that will happen. I can't see them going back before Thursday, probably Friday if even then.
