Closed on Friday or early closing?

Seems like they would not cancel since it’s supposed to stop snowing and roads don’t seem like they’ll get worse.
We’ll see.
I’m new to winter HS sports.
Must be dicey getting games & meets in during the winter

They will cancel because I'm sure they're getting a barrage of hate all day today from the types on this thread. Re-freeze they will shout.

The roads will be fine.

A handful of busses were late and thousands of students are in school learning, while a lot of you just come here to whine about the most exaggerated “problems.”

....None of which is in Fairfax County

So, it's ok that it happened in an adjacent County. Wow!! Children are still being transported to school in Fairfax County.

It isnt okay that a bus was rear ended, but prince william is further south and west, both of which have more severe conditions than fairfax county. The reality is that the schools are open today. If you're not comfortable driving your kid or putting them on a bus, then keep them home.

This is not a valid point. If someone can be reasonably uncomfortable about their child making it to school safely, then it is responsibility of the school system to close, end of story. People are legally responsible for sending their kids to school. If people have a legitimate reason to be worried, then it shouldn't be up to them, it's up to the schools not to put them in a situation to make that decision.

I’m not you understand how ridiculous you sound. Define “reasonable.” Define “legitimate.” Then I’ll show you a thousand parents who disagree with you.

Like it or not, I'm right - it's not even a matter of opinion. Yes, it's true - what defines a reasonable and legitimate basis to be worried is the subject of debate. What is not up for debate is whether schools should be closed if there is a reasonable cause to be worried. Parents should never be put into a position by a government entity such as the school system where there choice is either to willfully violate the law or to put their children in danger.

But that is basically everyday. There are risks to driving or taking the bus everyday.

Today was fine. There are volunteers for special events. Kids got here safely even if a few were late. I’m here helping for an art project and all is well.

The roads are fine people! I’m deep in a neighborhood on the side-est of side streets and everything is fine. If your sidewalks are slick, put down some rock salt.

No afterschool activities are canceled.

The roads have been terrific all day.

Anonymous wrote:Why are we talking about teen drivers? The school system provides buses. If you have a situation where your child does not have a bus or walking route, you have decided to put them in that position.

You can't change back and forth on bus or no bus based on the weather. Teens listed with the transportation office as no bus would need to drive or be driven today--there is no bus provided for them.

If you opted out of the bus transportation at the beginning of the year, you accepted that you and your teen have a responsibility to get him/her to school every day that it is in session. If you're not comfortable with your teen driving, you need to find an alternate for them. You or spouse drive them, public transportation, whatever. If you can't find an alternate, the student stays home, but the entire country shouldn't have to stay home because you couldn't find transportation for your teen that opted out of the bus option.

My older kid is in college now, but this is a conversation that we had as a family before he started driving to high school. We did end up having a parent drive with him once or twice - inconvenient, sure, but also good exposure for him to drive in those conditions with a parent along. Younger kid isn't driving yet, but I expect we'll have the same conversation when the time comes.

I won't presume that your opinion is the same, but I suspect that most of us would be less concerned if a driver swerves into an Amazon delivery truck carrying our package than if a driver swerves into a schoolbus carrying our children.

I actually saw a school bus get rear-ended a number of years ago. It was a bright sunny day, but I guess the driver just didn’t notice that the bus was stopping. Neither vehicle appeared to have more than a slight dent. Not saying that accidents are okay, and I did want schools to be closed today, but the reality is that there is some risk of accidents in any weather.

Yup, this happened to my kids bus. Bright sunny fall day and some lady rear ended their school bus on a flat road. Accidents happen, kids were fine.

But today all the busses and all the kids were totally fine. FCPS made the right call. Some of you have serious, serious problems.

That's because everything is FINE outside. Nice, normal winter day. Did you people grow up under rocks in southern Florida? I grew up in Michigan, we probably wouldn't have even had a delay. Also remember that the busses maneuver better in the snow than your mommy Telluride.

Do you people even WANT your children in school? Maybe homeschool big mommas!!!!

Did you miss the new winter weather advisory that was issued for the area? Begins at 7:00 pm due to the strong possibility of more precipitation and ice. A question about activities being cancelled is legitimate.

Because Loudoun canceled, students at TJ who live in Loudoun County could not show up to school today, leading to lots of disruption. I know this is only one school, but it's worth pointing out.

The anxiety in this area is truly out of control. This must be the part of the world with the highest number of risk averse people per capita.

There are a lot of after school activities tonight. My bet is they don't shut it down. Things are fine. The drama around here is astonishing.

Is that true? Why would they not be allowed to show up at school?
