Private schools, as well as donors, can do whatever they want.

You sound delusional telling us where our donations should go. Focus on yourself.

Sure! Continue subsidizing upper middle class families so they can continue their trips to Europe.

We are happy to. This is the life we live.

Good for you! Ask other middle class families that are near the cutoff of financial aid what do they think. Probably they are going to be as happy as you.

Get a life. How pathetic you are to be fixated on this.

Toxic parent from a private school that gets upset about providing aid to low income families ☝️.

Delusional.

Even More toxic ☝️. Makes sense not to provide help to low income families in that environment.

And you should read less of DCUM if you cannot handle it.

For the troll parents that want to say that is false choice. Yes you could donate 50 cents to low income families and 50 cents to middle income families. The question is which donation is more impactful. My point is that if you don’t subsidize middle income families, those kids will be perfectly fine.

Absolutely. In my mind, if you live in Westmoreland Hills or Somerset for example- and your public schools are great - why do you think that your kids are entitled to a private school education that you can’t pay for??? Financial aid should be for kids whose lives are going to be changed by the education it makes possible for them. Not for kids whose parents made poor financial decisions in their quest to keep up with the Joneses.

Couldn’t agree more.

Most people who get financial aid don’t live in those areas. At least at our school most of the people on aid are feds, fed contractors, single moms, teachers, administrators etc. Rarely are they living in a multi million dollar home with only one child in private. It’s those who live further away or not in the fancier areas that receive it.

That is who SHOULD be receiving it but there 1000% are also people living in multi million dollar homes who are receiving it - at my school and at least two others. The topic is should financial aid be stricter and when I think about that family I wholeheartedly say yes!

Just because YOU deem a question to be pathetic doesn’t mean it is - the only people who should not want to talk about this are the ones on the receiving end of an FA grift. Everyone else should be happy to discuss.

That's how private school works. If you don't like it, don't send your kids there. Easy peasy.

No, we are a full-pay private school family and we understand that private schools are private businesses. You don't get a say into how they run their business.

If you don't like how they are run then don't send your kids there.

I can see a bit of groupthink here….

People with ability to pay who game the system are not a reason to ban middle class families who cannot afford full pay from financial aid.

And most "poor" families don't even bother applying - would you? There's a lot of incidental costs involved with private school - the uniforms, aftercare, hot lunches, special lunches, the billion special outfits day, like hey wear your favorite football jersey this week, baseball next week, fave green pants, orange shirt, colonial costume, etc etc. The classist vibe. I don't think DD's grade has any poor families at all.

Yes! People should only post statements that other parents like and agree with! Probably is part of the guidelines in DCUM.

Yes we have to subsidize middle class families so they can cover their incidentals like the bmw, trips to Europe, the mortgage, etc etc

Putting poor kids in elite private day schools would be a disaster. Giving them free tuition doesn’t solve the problem. They wouldn’t fit in and would be miserable. Anyone who understands the experience of private day schools would know this. The vacations, cars, hobbies, tutors, clothing, lifestyle. It just isn’t compatible. Whoever thinks this is a good idea is completely out of touch.

Again the topic here is “should financial aid be stricter” - I am a full pay private school parent also and my opinion on the question that was asked is yes financial aid should be stricter. For example, if you are self employed, it is VERY easy to trick Clarity - which is the software my school uses to determine financial aid eligibility and amount. My school does zero checking, follow up, meetings, confirmations, auditing, etc on anything. So yes I think there should be something else besides this software which is the single determining factor in FA at my school.
