| As someone commuting every day since I returned to office in March 2023 full time traffic has been on average 1-3 minutes longer each way the past two weeks. Not exactly a big deal. |
As someone who has never worked from home (even in the pandemic) and has lived in/worked in the DMV for 30y, traffic has definitely been worse for me over the past 2 months. Leaving home at 6am used to mean I could get to work by 6:45 - now it is 7:00 or later. And leaving work at 4p used to take me an hour - now it is an extra 15-30m. |
How long is your commute? 5 minutes? |
was 26-29 minutes on way in now 27-33 On way home was 50-52 minutes now 53 to 55 minutes. Slightly more traffic between Capital One building and American Legion Bridge. It has always been packed, just a bit more. |

I've been coming into my federal office daily for the past two years. Drive from Glover Park to downtown DC. It's about 10-12 minutes door to door and I've noticed no real change.
The things that really affect my commute are whether or not schools are on a break. I have to deal with the local street traffic of six schools (public + private) and two universities. |

No real change for my within NW DC commute either.
But what we should really be talking about is the prospect of a dying DC (and our democracy) resulting from the decimation of our non-partisan civil service. How is the whining about commutes relevant when tens of thousands who want to work are denied their professions? |
I think those kinds of threads exist too. |
Yeah, but this is absurd. Same considerations apply to those reluctant to RTO as always: this is the deal with your current position. If you think you can find a better one, go ahead. At least you have a job and can continue on the career path and specialty you have already invested decades in. |
It's definitely been worse. Now I have to leave at 5:30 am instead of 6 to make it to work on time. |
I get this argument, but also think it’s a slippery slope. Complaining about negative impacts to your work life balance might be tone deaf right now. But it absolutely does suck that they’ve made a bunch of stupid changes just to make people uncomfortable (and not for mission-related reasons). |
I've been commuting from Old Town to Springfield for 8 years. My commute went from 14 minutes to 26 minutes in the last two months. |
So traffic of 8 schools total takes you 12 mins total. |
Tiny violin 🎻 for you. My daily commute is now 3 hours 45 min. During covid I could get into DC in 35 minutes |
Where do you live?? |
As a civil servant expecting to get fired and have to start over at 40, I'm not sure this is the thread for you. We can worry about the big picture while being frustrated by the daily grind. The world is a rich and complex place! |
