Right? What was going on? Did they just grab them off the street?

How did the outraged PP make it so far into the opening ceremony before turning it off? Was the decapitation ok? Ménage a trois also fine? So many things that would distress my grandmother in the first hour - I’m impressed they stuck it out.

They nailed the splits though! That must have been the only qualification.

OMG. I'm seriously curious what happened there. It did really look like they arrived last minute and were instructed "just lift your legs"

I posted what seems a million pages ago that we are in Paris, amd were watching live. It sucked being in the rain, but the excitement of being in the crowds is amazing. We too were watching a lot on screens (each one of the dance segments was on a different bridge across the Seine, we were located in one area).

The security was strict, hundreds of police everywhere, with pistols (holstered guns), and what looks to me like rapid fire machine guns. No one got through without a thorough inspection (inside bags, individually wanded - my empty pockets somehow beeped, and I had to turn my pockets inside out to show there was nothing there).

It was a long, crowded ride home on the subway, but worth it and fun being with the happy crowds.

Unfortunately, still raining hard this morning, and will continue all day. Happily, we are attending indoor events today (Saturday).

Chill.

No one us taking away your right to practice your religion. Don’t question their right to practice their art.

If a holy moment of Islam were portrayed by a bunch of drag queens on the world stage, I’m quite confident you nor anyone else would be defending it as art. I’d also bet good money the response would be violent.

As a Christian I am actually so happy that we don’t go batsh!t over nonsense like this and go about our day. Not everything needs our attention. I think this is all vulgar and dumb but art has always struck more conservative people as vulgar and dumb. That’s the purpose of art- to make you think and feel things.

The last thing modern Christianity needs is violence and hysteria. Isn’t it enough that our brethren are working to create a theocracy?

Thank you! It's an artistic take on a piece of art. A painting. People seriously need to chill.

Does anyone truly believe that Jesus himself be offended by being depicted as a fat woman? If so, please report yourself to Matthew 25.

To be fair to the French, shock and irreverence to religion and sex are their shtick and god knows they’ve pissed off the Muslims with it historically too.. But to claim this Olympics is all about peace and pausing conflict and then pretty gleefully attempt to offend many participants’ religions is pretty disingenuous.

I was at their 98 World Cup opening ceremonies - just a teen backpacker who got lucky enough to get tickets- and it was much more spectacle, fantastical, and whimsy and not at all political or controversial. Guess I’m getting old…

Agree. When I started to raise an eyebrow I reminded myself that these were just the French being French. They could have put more effort into being uniting, but this wasn't surprising

I’m enjoying your live reports and hope you keep reporting back.

But you are like them in thinking other people!s behavior should be curtailed by YOUR beliefs.

No, MOCKING other people's beliefs is not the same as disapproving of them.

And that is why olympic flag was hanging upside down yesterday through the entire ceremony. France is in trouble.

They took artistic license with a famous painting. That is all the last supper is to many people. Artist are allowed to riff off other’s work.

What does that painting has to do with Paris or olympics? The painting is in Milan.

I didn’t realize the flag was upside down. Was it intentional? To show disarray or to show how upside down this open ceremony was?

My question as well. DaVinci was not French, and it has nothing to do with the history or culture of France. Nothing to do with sports either.

So then, just another opportunity to elevate the oppressed segment of society. Because they’re so invisible these days.

It’s heretical to think the painting is the true depiction of the biblical last supper. Clearly the opening ceremony was referencing the painting, not the biblical account. The weird poses, everyone on the same side of the table, hand positioning - all that. I’m not saying it was good, but it wasn’t aN aTtAcK oN ChRiStIaNiTy.

He lived and died in France. I think if a ceremony’s goal is to be inclusive it should not go out of its way to offend people. Offending any other religion or group would not be tolerated, and neither would nitpicking whether someone has the right to be offended or not bc it’s just a painting, it’s not really Jesus… Doing the catwalk part to show lgbtq diversity and inclusion was perfectly fine and good, and so was the segment with the three people at the library.
