That's not how my kid's day looks. You forgot, when kids are in music and sports and also in school activities, not to mention private lessons too. Or, kids who are working. And, what about parents who need their older kids to watch the younger ones. Private school kids aren't getting more sleep. If your kid has trouble sleeping, get a sleep study. |
First, showers are in the morning the way God intended. Second, IDGAF about sports and after-school activities; they are optional, while school is obligatory. Things required by the law should not be done in ways that obviously damage the health of people required to do them. Starts before 8:30 are in this category. What you do about your travel soccer team issues is your problem. |
Some people like to shower at night. So, no they aren't, especially when you only have one bathroom. You may not care about sports and activities, but many of our kids do and colleges do. Why wouldn't you want your kids to explore their interests and talents? Many of our kids manage just fine, so I don't care that your kids refuse to go to bed, you refuse to parent them and you are too selfish to have them in any activities as well because you cannot be inconvenienced by your kids. You want what is easy for you, not best. Your kids not getting enough sleep is your problem. My kids high level sports and other activities are not a problem. You are the one complaining, not me. So, grow up, parent and get your kids to bed. |
Ah! The “high level” sports. Y’all are fairly transparent. |
(You’re going to lose on this, by the way. It may not be while your kids are in school, but this dark o’clock start business is ending.) |
DP. There's not much of a risk of that while there continues to be no plausible solution to opening later. |
If they can sleep an hour later in the morning, there’s no issue with going to bed an hour later. If they’re more tired at midnight, they’ll fall asleep faster. If school were pushed back by half an hour or even an hour, my kids would go to bed at the same time they do now and they’d get more sleep. |
Ah! The self-absorbed parent who doesn't support their child's interests. Its all about you, not your kids. |
Except when they have to get up for sports and other things in the morning so they get up regardless of what time school starts. How is it healthy for kids to go to bed at midnight? Your argument makes no sense. It's not an hour later, it would be 45 minutes later at best. Your kids might go to bed at the same time as yours are not doing as much as other kids, but some of ours would just go to bed later which isn't helpful at all. And, at that point they are exhausted to do homework as it's so late. If your kids need more sleep, have them go to bed earlier. |
This is such a pointless hill to die on. Let’s fix lazy curricula. Let’s fix crime in the schools. Let’s fix the growing teacher shortage. Let’s fix the over-reliance on technology.
Pushing back start times isn’t going to make any meaningful difference. It simply isn’t. If parents are worried about their child’s sleep, then they should enforce bedtimes and limit technology usage. That would make a far bigger impact than imposing a later start time. |
With redistricting on the table if more kids end up on a bus with longer commutes won’t this problem just worsen? |
I just signed the petition. I am a ES parent but I know that HS will be here soon enough |
Boundary changes will likely result in fewer kids on the bus with shorter trips. |
HOW will this dark o'clock start business (which I agree is a problem) end? https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/info/belltimesworkgroup/Rpt2013BellTimesWorkGrpReport.pdf |
Sounds like these kids are doing too much and are over scheduled! Everyone needs to make choices. My kid doesn't have trouble sleeping, they have a common teen body clock and would naturally sleep midnight - 10a if that was how the world worked. Obviously, it doesn't, so we do all the things to do our best. But again, my argument is the only difference in my kids' after school schedule is 3-3:30, where one is finishing class/commuting and the other has discretionary time. |
