Here are the Gunn HS college acceptances. 6 to Merced. About 60 to the other UC campuses. And a whole lot of other great schools.

Oh God, let's stop involved parents and only admit single parent urms |
This is matriculation not acceptances. |
I agree that CA should change the policy. But to be clear, if the top 9% (statewide index) do not get into their campus of choice--they are offered UC Merced, space permitted. Doesn't seem like he was offered UC Merced. |
That is 457 and approaching 100% of the graduating class. I see the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, JHU, UChicago, CMU, and basically all of the other coveted destinations. A lot of talented Asian students left Gunn HS last year and moved on to the very same schools on Zhang's list. With a 60% Asian population at Gunn we know that many, many, many of them were Asian. It is hard for me to believe Zhang was rejected because he is Asian when his Asian classmates were accepted to the same schools on his list |
Matriculation just means enrolled. The number of accepted will be even higher. The success rate at that high school is incredible! |
| What? They knew he was going to drop out at some point. He doesn't need a college and colleges don't need a drop-out. Win-win. |
Again, if he had a black skin color…. |
+1 Sir / Madam You have debated yourself into a corner from which you cannot escape. The facts don't support your assertion. |
Seems like he was judged as not good enough compared to his peers (mostly Asians). Doesn’t this reinforce the notion that Asians are held to a higher standard just because they are competing with other Asians instead of being judged in relation to the general population? It is ridiculous that going to a high performing, rich suburb school actually penalized him. He should have gone to a mediocre high school and be the top student. Then he will be accepted everywhere. This is the state of US college admissions. Something has to be changed esp for state school systems such as the UCs. |

I have recently read about a lot of families moving far away from places like New York City, Washington DC etc for that exact reason. Especially since so many can work from home now. Entire families leave to live in rural areas where there is no competition from their classmates.
Pretty messed up, right? |
Yes, he was judged against his peers and penalized for going to a high performing school. The same thing happens across the country. Unfortunately, we don't have a uniform system of grading or even curriculum in this country--not even at the state level. Even with standardized tests, how does a school compare students in relation to the general population? |
No, in that case, he will be dismissed as not 'well-rounded' and if he presents a 'well-rounded' application, he will be dismissed as not 'standing out' from other Asian applicants. In addition, he will be stereotyped as robotic, one-dimensional, lacking leadership skills, lacking positive personality traits, and lacking whatever else they can come up with that can be negative. |
| A lot like the electoral college system here. They don't want all of the political power to be aggregated in one place. Sort of the same with opportunities |
We should hold Olympics like this too since this is such a great way to find talents. |
