In general, a lot of people are talking about 'Bama Rush because their kids are watching it on TikTok. Then there's the documentary. This columnist has an opinion. But it's not your opinion - so why aren't you writing a well-informed opinion piece explaining all the benefits of sorority culture instead of cr@pping on this one black columnist? Interesting that none of you were interested hearing what an actual top drawer (Tri Delta) Southern sorority alum has to say about any of this, so I wonder if any of you even know anyone in a sorority - are you even women? Maybe you're just a bunch of trolls who found an excuse to say something racist.

Puhleeze. Cottom put her piece out there. So we have the right to say in detail exactly why it's misogynistic trash.

That’s an interesting fact, because very few people identify themselves as progressive.

It’s a term like “woke” - a trigger word that in 2023 has a meaning that primarily exists inside the minds of conservatives.

Whatever. I’m a progressive who thinks Cottom is a misogynist, and I’m not going to let you try to put me in some box to invalidate that.

Oh no, it has real-world meaning. It’s the group we know hates us and acts like our enemy. What they call themselves and whether or not they accept our term for them hardly even matters.

Does it? Can you define it? The closest that we've gotten is the DeSantis administration having to define it under oath: "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." https://www.fox13news.com/news/what-does-woke-mean-gov-desantis-officials-answer-during-andrew-warren-trial That doesn't sound like what you said.

So 'Bama isn't quite the escalator to success that Cottom is making it out to be, at least in the eyes of BCC kids and their families?

Like at any state school, there is a small percentage of students who will go on to have substantial influence in the state (i.e., in politics). I would bet that at Alabama, those kids are Greek. I would also bet that a lot of those kids are from families who already have some influence, or at least have enough money to try to buy it. But there are thousands of Greek students who are just in Greek life for fun, friendship, parties, etc. and have no political aspirations. Cottom's article reads like she believes that the entire Greek system is full of of the former group of students such that it's more or less the point of joining, but that's just not the case for the vast majority of students.

"Top drawer" - oh my goodness. You really do believe your own hype, don't you? Sure, this woman has an opinion. And we are sharing our opinions as well, mainly that she is WAY out of line critiquing white women when any critique of black women (by white women) would be excoriated immediately. She's welcome to her opinion, and we are welcome to critique her stupidity.

Dr Cottom in fact HAS written about beauty standards and women of color. But apparently unless she writes an article on how black sororities uphold white supremacy she’s not allowed to write about Bama Rush.

Adding that I don't know how someone who was in a sorority would not understand this, but maybe she's drawing on her experience with NPHC sororities and extrapolating. I know very little about the NPHC, so I have no clue. But that's also why I'd never write an article about them.

DP. Wow, zero self-awareness. You poor, poor victim. It's not like "progressives" EVER say hateful things about conservatives and act hateful toward them, 24/7 here on DCUM (and everywhere else). Poor you.

me too. and I actually was totally prepared to be pissed off by it. I wasn’t.

Did you read the first few paras? You don’t think this is mocking the wannabe sisters? “ There is a lot of hair in these videos — standardized for length and blond in ratios impossible without chemical intervention; it swings exuberantly, signaling good health and traditional femininity. Their robotic dancing to hip-hop songs showcases gymnastic athleticism instead of looser routines made for the club. They keep time, but even the fact that they aren’t clapping on the one and three seems intentional — being cute rather than sexy protects them from the dreaded label “trashy.” Walking that fine line without mussing their hair is part of their popular appeal.”

Or any of OP’s three quotes. These are critical with mocking overtones.

that reads to me like a sociological description that could be made of any phenomenon. if you find that inherently insulting then I guess you don’t have to read it.

DP. Ok - we'll apply her words to this group of sorority girls doing "robotic dancing to hip hop songs" with lots of hair, "standardized for length," "walking that fine line without mussing their hair as part of their popular appeal.” Isn't this Kamala Harris's sorority?

The sorority sisters in that video are racist and anti-feminist as well

+1

Tressie has no business whatsoever critiquing white women. How would you react if a white woman wrote an expose and critique of black sororities? It's so telling that you refuse to answer this.

If she had a real beef with a Black sorority she should write about it. If they refuse to even consider White applicants that’s a problem.
