Going out again to sniff it all in to see if I can tell the difference.

Are you joking? If not, where do you live? I opened our screen door for five minutes while our dog went to use the bathroom and it sent off all of our air filters like crazy. Today is super thick, hazy, and the smell cannot be missed.

I woke up with a sore throat, congestion and cough and I was only out for 30 minutes yesterday and had our windows closed. I'm going to work from home today instead of going to office as planned.

What is "setting off a filter" ? My filters are passive objects.

Do you have a monitor?

Yes, HEPA filters that are set to increase output when there are odors or bad air conditions.

I cannot understand how someone's terrified of going outside for a couple of minutes, unless you are a person in seriously vulnerable health.

Why would you assume they are control freaks before you assume that they could be medically vulnerable. Many people have illnesses or are compromised in ways that are not visible to outsiders.

And for those who are truly hypochondriacs - that is also an illness in itself. It’s not something to make fun of because you’re fortunate enough not to experience it.

It's the judginess of others. I don't care what someone decided to do - wear a mask, stay indoors, etc. Calling people "anti-science" for going for a walk/jog when someone's in perfectly solid health... is completely ridiculous. The warnings for the DC area are about vulnerable populations. And those populations should take caution for themselves. Others are perfectly capable of going outdoors and seeing how their body feels.

Like with Covid, there's a certain segment of the population who desires to control others, because it satisfies *their* personal degree of control within themselves. Remember the yelling at others for not wearing a mask outside? Or for working out in parks with friends? It's the same control freak aholes, that think no one should be exercising outdoors this week.

You mean progressive democrats, right? Described them perfectly.

ah yes, it's the progressive democrats who like to control other people. Anti-abortion, book banning, drag show banning, let's shove our religion down people's throats....that's ok. Masks during a new pandemic? The horror!

It's really not that bad.

This is the wussification of America. Everyone is always looking for a reason for things to be difficult.

LOL "Be tough! Damage your lungs for no good reason!"

You guys are nuts. Nobody is getting damaged lungs from outdoor recess this week.

You all need to get treatment for your anxiety and hypochondria.

My doctor who has documented my lung damage would disagree with you. To answer the OP, yes, I'm limiting activity because I have lung damage. As to what others are deciding to do - they know their bodies best.

You're lungs were damaged from wildfire smoke you sustained while outdoors walking your dog?!?!

Or your lung were previously damaged from something else and fall into that 'vulnerable population' category?

Two widely different thing. I'm willing to bet that 99% of the kids staying home today, or being pulled from baseball practice, have perfectly healthy lungs that would not sustain any damage from attending school

My lungs were damaged from failed surgery. I think you are really going over the top on your posts (and realize, there are multiple people who are posting). The OP asked "Are you limiting your activity" not why, not "are you crazy for walking your dog"

I walked my dog and had to use my inhaler twice. My kid is at school, I don't know the status of her free time, but yesterday they were kept in doors.

I'm not sure why you are yelling at people who make a different choice than you.

There are some very ableist people on this forum. Hugs from someone who also has damaged lungs and 2 kids who have asthma.

To be fair, saying "nobody gets permanent lung damage from a few days outside in bad air" (which is what PP said) is WAAAAAAYYYY different than someone say "I got lung damage from a failed surgery"

It's not ableist at all

This is a big of a tangent, but while I don't care if somebody goes on a run today, how they feel right now is not the only issue. A smoker cannot tell a difference every time they are damaging their lungs, but they are still damaging them. You can't tell a difference every time you go out into the sun without sunscreen but you're still damaging each time you do that. Of course since we are in an area where this level of pollution is pretty rare so I'm not saying that if somebody goes outside they are doomed, but it is not scientifically accurate to say "I'm in good health, I feel fine, so going on a run today is not bad for me." They really do sound like they don't know some science facts when they say that. And the guy who said that people in India have strong longs, wow. I just really hope he was joking because that really is just anti-science.

The images of downtown DC are hard to believe when I look out my own window outside the beltway and see the sun shining. It’s hazy, but more like an August day than the apocalyptic orange. I can smell the smoke and am staying indoors while the AQI is so high. Seems stupid to go out in this if you don’t have to. It’s just weird because there isn’t visual evidence of how bad the air is if you aren’t in the city.

Runner here. Most runners I know are highly attuned to their health - you can't be a serious distance runner if you aren't paying attention to alllll the things like hydration, nutrition, sleep, etc. The runners I know do their best to protect their bodies and their health, to make sure they can continue to run and run strong, for the long term. So I can't imagine any of them running this morning.

Thankfully, the air is set to clear this afternoon, so I predict there will be a lot of runners out for an evening run today.

Interesting, I'm out by Dulles and can usually see Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland from my office window. Today I can barely see past the parking lot.

I miss Roseanne too.

You can watch all of her show on Peacock for five bucks a month.

This is going to be the new normal. Rich people are going to insulate themselves from it to what degree they can. The rest of us or just gonna have to get on with it, but when inequality really spirals, that’s when sh*ts gonna get real.
