You must be squinting very hard. Maybe that's a habit acquired after you deplete your bank accounts to join the ranks of the house-poor in the Langley district. |
We know this how exactly? |
We are on the wealthier side for Langley. We have a seven figure income and we did not stretch in the slightest to live here. Every year we consider switching to private but our kids are thriving and love their friends. |
I don’t know anyone who is really happy with their public schools who thinks about switching to privates every year. Sounds like Langley isn’t all that. |
Really? Almost everyone we know during Covid considered switching to private and many did. My kids are still young. My youngest is in preschool and most of the kids in the school go to private school so we are also considering it. Then you think about the other 2 kids who are thriving in public and wonder if you should also switch them to private, especially during the middle of a pandemic. |
I was just commenting on the college admissions. My kids don’t attend Langley. I was an overachiever and I do struggle with what I think is best for my children. I know I don’t want TJ or Potomac for my kids. At the same time, I’m not sure if Langley would be best for them either. |
The college admissions results are not appreciably different at Langley and Chantilly. The level of snobbery is. |
The results ate incomplete. Chantilly has 700 seniors and Langley has 500. This instagram is a fraction of the class. |
One works with the available evidence, which to date indicates no big difference. Hope those spending the extra money to live in Langley got some other benefit out of it. |
Fair point but you realize you have described a good portion of FCPS parents? The biggest difference between Langley and other schools is wealth. Just own it. There’s nothing wrong with it. |
In our old neighborhood, not everyone had grad degrees. Not even close. There were a lot of blue collar workers. I am sure the demographics of Langley, Oakton, Vienna, Arlington, Bethesda, Chevy Chase are all the same. I am not familiar with Chantilly as I don’t know anyone who lives there. I went to a high school like Langley in the Northeast. One big difference that I see is that in VA, state schools seem to be quite popular. This may be geographic or because VA has so many excellent public school options like UVA, VT and W&M. Dh and I went to schools where good private college were popular like Cornell, Columbia, NYU, Boston College, Tufts, Amherst, Bowdoin, Wellesley, Swarthmore, Fordham, etc. Not many kids went public that could afford private. I am surprised more kids from around here don’t go to Georgetown or Johns Hopkins. I wonder if they just opt for UVA since obvious lower price tag. I wonder if the normal VA doesn’t apply to these other good private colleges in the NE. |
Dh has a 20 min door to door commute into DC. We wanted a short commute and good schools. That is why we live in McLean. We looked at both the McLean High and Langley side and we just happen to like the house we bought better. We live about 5 min from Langley High and 10 min from McLean High. I think I posted upthread about choosing where to live based on work. I personally liked Oakton and Vienna but crossing Route 7 would have added 30 min to DH’s commute so we decided on McLean. |
If the bubble works for you, great. I measured my peers by how mentally tough and resilient they were, not whether they met a standard of normality. I couldn't smoke pot or drink - I was nationally competitive from 15 - rich kids get second chances- I knew cidnt. You likely know better, though. From single mother poverty, I went to Duke all on my own on athletic scholarship (magna cum laude) and Georgtown (again on my own with no debt and summa cum laude). Did not push my kids in any way but did send both to Princeton. My union guys taught me to be very tough and reslient, not something I associate with Langley where mommy and daddy hover. I am sure you and your kids went to better schools than me and my kids, so I will concede to as to the advantages of an effete environment. |
The only snobbery I’ve seen on this thread and all the other stupid ones like it are snobby posters putting down Langley kids and families just for the hell of it. Not a good look. Makes all the rest of you look pretty bad. NP |
LHS had some drama queens who think one person is posting - best part! |
