Charters: When is yours dropping the outdoor mask mandate?

LA just announced masks not required indoors. It will be funny when a handful of charter in DC are the only schools worldwide still insisting on this.

And by worldwide, it really will be worldwide. I can't wait for our charter to be one of only, say, 12 schools worldwide still participating in an indoor school mask mandate. What a privileged and elite group!

Germany is still masking elementary school kids, but they also have more than ten times the case rate as DC right now. Clearly, their medical-grade mask mandate (no cloth masks since late 2020) and all their other crazy restrictions didn't prevent this surge.

Even during this surge, Germany does not require children under the age of 6 to mask. At all, even if unvaccinated, even on public transportation or at school.

Are there Asian countries that require children under 6 to mask at school? I really think the US generally, and DC specifically, is unique in masking preschool and kindergarten age children. It is so weird.

You are right, that's why I said elementary school children. They do not mask toddlers and preschoolers, even though they otherwise go pretty far in their Covid restrictions.

My brother's family in Germany recently caught Covid, and it was their masked and vaccinated 10yo who brought it home, not their unmasked and unvaccinated 2yo (who then also caught it from her sister but experienced the fastest recovery of the whole family, who was otherwise vaccinated and boosted).

I don't think masking of children has more than a marginal effect on transmission and should never be mandatory, given how low a risk the virus is to kids, even unvaccinated ones.

indoor masking is still required in pg public schools, so this hyperbole isn't super helpful

Hey. One additional county in the entire world is doing this.

Not at all embarrassing.

my point is that some people seem to really be leaning into this victim role that their school "will be the last in the world" -- see the hyperbolic posts above. I shared to normalize this timeline a bit even if it isn't what we all would want.

I hear you. Still, our outdoor mask mandate remains in place and there has been no word from admin about changing anything.

This seems like such low hanging fruit. No kids are going to pass Covid running around at recess. Throw us a bone!!

I am annoyed that they surveyed the school community. There are way too many uber anxious parents for this to have arrived at a rational result. The admin should have just been leaders and made an actual evidence based decision. If they don't make masks optional after spring break, we might be in the running for the last school in the country still masking...

+1 and we are probably at the same school. It's the first time the school has ever asked parents for their input and I think it's because they know they will get the response they want which is to keep masking for the rest of the year. The school has not followed science and acts like it is still March 2020. They excitedly announced that they were stopping temperature checks and taking down the plexiglass partitions which have done nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Regardless of all that it makes NO sense to keep kids masked while rest of the world and DC run around without masks. Choice is just that -- let the scared parents or the ones that haven't vaccinated their kids wear mask and let my vaccinated child follow the science.

We’re probably at the same school also. It’s embarrassing, quite frankly.

Uh-huh. And you are opposed to temperature checks?

Why not leave the school? It looks like you don't fit in the community?

Are 5 and unders required to mask in these countries? I honestly don’t know. Obviously older kids do and masking is more normalized in these countries due to years of masking against other viruses. But that’s not the same as masking 3 and 4 year olds, as we do here.

I wish someone would do a global study on masking kids at school. It shouldn’t even be that hard to collect data. It would be so helpful to have real comparative data on the issue.
