| Dont forget that clubs do Sh*** and that parents are the ones who pay, pay the club, pay for the individual training, pay, pay, pay. Why would colleges or NWSL pay a fee to clubs?clubs do 0. Top players are the result of individual effort supported by family. No club, at least locally can claim or take credit of a local player in the pros or top ranked college team.Stop comparing US youth clubs with the European academies |
Solidarity payments to colleges will be a heavy cost on NWSL. |
MLSN is already paying solidarity payments to youth clubs. https://www.mlssoccer.com/mlsnext/news/mls-next-development-grant-program-what-to-know-how-it-works#:~:text=If%20a%20player%20is%20transferred,to%20receive%20under%20FIFA's%20regulations. This is the trajectory women's soccer will eventually take as it continues to evolve. |
Some American clubs develop players. But you're right most don't. But that's not the point. The point is that if transfer fees are paid it will attract higher levels of development from youth clubs as they compete for transfer fees from pro and college entities. |

Are you starting to see why college sports becoming a form of professional sports is such a big deal?
It opens all kinds of doors that weren't available before. |
MLS only spent $100,000 for 10 kids, seems like a cheap marketing stunt to avoid a lawsuit. |
Agree 100%. |

Yeah but they were there to clean up the mess after the Academy folded....seems they have a more financially sound and sustainable economic model. |
Boys DA became MLS Next Girls DA became GA ECNL tried to grab boys clubs and was able to grab girls clubs when DA blew up. Boys ECNL is just not that desirable. |
This seems like a very negative thing to say. Whatever the amount MLSN is paying solidarity payments to youth clubs that feveloped players that go pro. No other leagues are doing this |
MLS is paying for MLSN because they poached players. Regardless, as a PP mentioned, the dollars here are way too small to help youth soccer on the boys side so unclear on where USSF would get $20-30 million a year to fully subsidize a girl version of MLSN. |

In MLSN only the academies are free, and not even all of them! They have a two tiered setup, with the paying clubs second class citizens.
Even that little though points to a future where the very best kids are found early and routed into MLS and USL academies. The elite of those go pro and the rest compete for the college spots. If non-income college sports survive the NIL storm. Boys ENCL is in a tough spot at its price point. SY is a differentiator. |
Thank you, MLSN is cheaper to run than people think. As you said only certain clubs are full free acadamies.. MLS rules around homegrown players are something pro clubs can choose if they want to invest in or not. If pro clubs choose to offer free soccer it's much more likely that they'll identify top tier talent. The same thing could easily be implemented on the girls side with NWSL Next. The clubs that choose to invest in free acadamies (likely Wave and ACFC) will attract all the best players and will dominate the league. |
| Same thing is happening in fastpitch softball - USA softball moved to SY and other large organizations are doing the same. Apparently college coaches pushed for the change. So happening beyond soccer. |
