ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Dont forget that clubs do Sh*** and that parents are the ones who pay, pay the club, pay for the individual training, pay, pay, pay. Why would colleges or NWSL pay a fee to clubs?clubs do 0. Top players are the result of individual effort supported by family. No club, at least locally can claim or take credit of a local player in the pros or top ranked college team.Stop comparing US youth clubs with the European academies

Like MLS Next with bio banding it wouldn't matter if NWSL Next was BY or SY. But, it would force the top ECNL players (that would like to participate in NWSL Next) to play up because of BY instead of playing down because of SY.

This would give GA players an advantage when competing for NWSL Next roster spots.

We are years away from that happening. But would be great for girls to have a pathway to the pros if that’s what they wanted to pursue.

ECNL has a strong hold on the girls market especially for college recruiting and the majority of girls will want to pursue college before going attempting to go pro.

MLSN players get recruited to colleges above ECNL players on the boys side.

Everyone knows that NWSLN is in the cards and that US Soccer is just waiting for the right time to play it's hand.

I don’t believe US soccer funds MLSN so why would they fund NWSL? It will be an option when the majority of the women’s teams can fund their own academies. I’m sure teams will be shifting around. I just don’t see the girls ECNL teams taking the risk to leave to a Ga/NWSL league.

But I’m not against it. The more options the better.

That is what I am saying. MLS can afford it and nwsl cant. Full stop. So if there is an NWSL Next it will have to be subsidized by someone. Running a single Academy is probably 2-3M expense a year without much profit offset.

NWSL league minimum is $48,500 (with food, clothing, car, and housing perdiems or equavalents) and will will increase each year up to $82,500 by 2030.

MLS league minimum is $71,000

There's room for NWSL Next whenever US Soccer and NWSL want to implement.

Now do averages...........or total revenue.........or profitability........or TV deals. Minimum wage in US and Belgium basically the same. Does that mean their GDP is similar as well?

Just for those curious, MLS new TV deal is 2.5B. NWSL is 240M. Ten times...........and the MLS attendance is 2X that of NWSL with half NWSL teams at 6500/game or lower. The worst attended club in MLS is still 3X the bottom half of the NWSL. Oh yeah and MLS ticket prices are significantly higher than NWSL.

Not trying to hate, just doing math. I dont see 12 new NWSL Next academies at 2.5M/year (and that is probably wildly conservative due to real estate and facilities cost) any time soon.

Maybe we can just get Rickets to pay for it, which she might. She certainly overpaid for the Red Stars from what I understand.

Both MLSN and NWSLN could easily fund Acadmies by forcing colleges to pay transfer fees for top talent.

Welcome to the real world NCAA.
But then would MLS and NWSL have to pay colleges for those drafted?

No more draft for NWSL everyone is a free agent out of college.
Solidarity payments to colleges will be a heavy cost on NWSL.

Some American clubs develop players. But you're right most don't.

But that's not the point. The point is that if transfer fees are paid it will attract higher levels of development from youth clubs as they compete for transfer fees from pro and college entities.

Are you starting to see why college sports becoming a form of professional sports is such a big deal?

It opens all kinds of doors that weren't available before.

MLS only spent $100,000 for 10 kids, seems like a cheap marketing stunt to avoid a lawsuit.

Yeah but they were there to clean up the mess after the Academy folded....seems they have a more financially sound and sustainable economic model.

Everyone knows that NWSLN is in the cards and that US Soccer is just waiting for the right time to play it's hand.

This is simply hard to believe. The NWSL has no money. They can barely pay livable wages to the majority of players. So if they can’t afford it it means someone has to subsidize this. US Soccer? Call me VERY skeptical. I would love it but not holding my breath until I see a P&L that supports it. I am old enough to remember the debacle that was DA and it was not pretty. A total rug pull.

Maybe but you have to admit that on the boys side ECNL is flailing and has pissed a lot of people off.

Boys DA became MLS Next
Girls DA became GA

ECNL tried to grab boys clubs and was able to grab girls clubs when DA blew up.

Boys ECNL is just not that desirable.

MLS is paying for MLSN because they poached players. Regardless, as a PP mentioned, the dollars here are way too small to help youth soccer on the boys side so unclear on where USSF would get $20-30 million a year to fully subsidize a girl version of MLSN.

In MLSN only the academies are free, and not even all of them! They have a two tiered setup, with the paying clubs second class citizens.

Even that little though points to a future where the very best kids are found early and routed into MLS and USL academies. The elite of those go pro and the rest compete for the college spots. If non-income college sports survive the NIL storm.

Boys ENCL is in a tough spot at its price point. SY is a differentiator.

Thank you, MLSN is cheaper to run than people think.

As you said only certain clubs are full free acadamies..

MLS rules around homegrown players are something pro clubs can choose if they want to invest in or not. If pro clubs choose to offer free soccer it's much more likely that they'll identify top tier talent.

The same thing could easily be implemented on the girls side with NWSL Next. The clubs that choose to invest in free acadamies (likely Wave and ACFC) will attract all the best players and will dominate the league.

Same thing is happening in fastpitch softball - USA softball moved to SY and other large organizations are doing the same. Apparently college coaches pushed for the change. So happening beyond soccer.
