I have excellent credit, but only two credit cards to my name...a capital one and a banana republic. Thinking of opening a few more, maybe one that could help me get miles so I can catch up to my husband (he travels for business frequently) and another for better cashback than I am currently getting. Or maybe an Amex, since I am yet to have one and I hear the SPG Amex is a winner.
However, I am nervous about adding 2 more cards and ruining my credit. I just have no idea how many credit cards an average person has... |

I wouldn't count a Banana Republic card as a credit card, really. So not counting store cards, I have four, at least.
- Citibank MC - Chase Visa - Target Visa - Capital One MC Plus a few store cards, like Kohl's, Ann Taylor, Lord & Taylor, and such. |

I have like five- all for different stores. Like a Jcrew one that is only used at Jcrew, etc. and then two main/regular ones.
I use the store credit cards (I think right now i just have banana, Jcrew, Target) only at the store and pay them off right away. I have my main Visa through my bank and then a mastercard in case anything happens to the Visa and I need access to money. I also have excellent credit. |
| I have two. I do 90% of my purchases on Discover. For those places that don't take Discover (fewer and fewer) or as a backup card, I have an LL Bean Visa. My wife has both of these and also has a credit union Visa that she's had since before we married. That's all that we really need and our credit is excellent. |
| I have one, and my husband has one. Excellent credit, which is a different story than when my husband had multiple, and was always forgetting to pay something, or never quite had enough cash flow to cover everything every month. I'm not sure what the benefit is of having more than one? |
| One with a $15,000 limit. I've never carried a balance on it. Credit score over 800. |
| 2 cards, Am Ex and Visa |
To spread the repayment out in two chunks during the month, instead of having one single payment. I have an Am Ex because I get cash back, but also have a mastercard because a lot of merchants don't take Am Ex. Also if your account is hacked, you are without a credit card for the day or two it takes to send you a replacement. |
| Check out the Fidelity AmEx -- 2% cash back with no limits. Only thing is you have to have a Fidelity account to take advantage of the card. It's a great card so long as you are someone who always pays the bills on time. |

AmEx and Mastercard. Costco Amex which gives us cash back once a year. Mastercard because AmEx isn't accepted everywhere. Also have a few store cards for the rewards - J Crew, Talbots, Gap.
As I understand it the credit score depends on the difference between your credit limit and your balance so it's not bad to have more cards as that increases your credit limit amount. I find it annoying because we have high balances but pay it off every month. But the credit report will show that we owe $6,000 or whatever we've charged that month and it will be a mark against us. It doesn't seem to factor in that we pay in full. I have thought about getting another card just to have a higher credit limit. |
| 0 and have a high score. |
| Zero? Really? How do you travel? |

Amex
2 Visas - one regular one linked to my debit 1 Master Card (hardly ever use because interest rate is high) At least 5 additional store or gas cards I mainly use only two of the cards I have, the Amex and the Visa Debit/Credit card. |
This is me too. |
Visa check card. |
